Our First Weeks of School:
The Principal’s Update

Dear Parents:

It is incredible to believe that we have already completed our first month of school. A HUGE thank you to all of the SMS parents who attended Curriculum Night in August. It is your partnership and continued support that allows successful learning to take place each day at Snellville Middle.

Enrollment

Our student enrollment is climbing. We are currently over our forecasted student projection; therefore we should receive additional staffing points. The administrators and I are working together to develop a growth plan for the potential staffing points. Our largest growth is in 6th and 8th grades and our plans will include ways to reduce some of the class sizes in these grade levels.

E-SPLOST

An E-SPLOST, is a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for education, a 1-cent sales tax on all retail sales in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett County Board of Education has called for a referendum to continue the E-SPLOST for another five years. The question will be on the county’s November 3, 2015 ballot. Click Here For More E-SPLOST information.

Early Release Days

Students will be released on Wednesday, September 23rd  and Thursday, September 24th at 1:30 p.m. for conferences.

Student-Led Conferences

Beginning this school year, our 6th grade conferences and a select group of 7th & 8th grade conferences will not be traditional parent-teacher conferences but will be student-led. During student led conferences, students will explain their progress toward or mastery of an academic goal as well as their habits of work and learning. Students will justify their progress by leading their parents through a series of assignments from their academic classes. Student led conferences increases student accountability concerning their academic and learning behaviors, helps students to learn to communicate better and hone their critical thinking skills. Student-led conferences support our students in becoming responsible, independent thinkers and leaders.

World’s Finest School Fundraiser

Our school is participating in the World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser. Please help your son or daughter participate in this fundraiser to help raise money for our school and also have a chance to win an Ipad or eligible to win a laptop ChromeBook. The Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to sell these delicious items to your family, friends and neighbors.

Chick-Fil-A Fridays

Wondering why your son or daughter is asking for money on Fridays? Well, we sell Chick-Fil-A biscuits every Friday. We sell chicken biscuits for only $3.00 and proceeds help to provide rewards and incentives for our students throughout the school year (e.g. monthly student pizza celebration, PBIS awards, student certificates and recognitions, etc.).

eCLASS

All schools in our district are considered eCLASS schools which means we use technology as an instructional tool for student learning. It is important that you are aware and understand the increased expectation of our students from Kindergarten through 12th grade with technology and internet use in school and access from home. You may notice your son or daughter logging into his or her My eCLASS for textbook access, class information and/or uploading class assignments.

Spirit Wear

We wear Comets spirit wear at Snellville Middle every Friday. Be sure your child is able to join in the Comet spirit and show school pride! We are proud to be Comets! Spirit wear is sold at the school store and on our website.

I am looking forward to another week of learning at SMS!

Sincerely,

Katise Menchan

BYOD Tip

Many teachers are now incorporating BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) into lessons and activities at school.     As a parent you may be asking what type of device is appropriate for students to have at school.    Although there is no one correct answer to this question we will offer some tips and advice on the subject.

Smart phones are a great BYOD device for many students because they are very portable and many students already have them.    If your child does not have a Smart phone or you are reluctant to have them bring it to school then one answer might be to let them bring an older, deactivated Smart phone.    Ask relatives or friends if they would donate a phone they no longer use.    Students are not allowed to use their own 3G or 4G data while at school so a deactivated phone that has Wi-Fi is perfect for BYOD.

Tablets, Chromebooks, and small laptops can also be utilized as BYOD devices in the classroom but sometimes their size and cost may be factors that make them less desirable than Smart phones.

Whatever your child chooses to bring to school to use with BYOD activities please help them remember these tips.

  • Keep the device with you and secure at all times.

  • Make sure the battery is completely charged.

  • Only use the device when the teacher allows.

  • Bring an inexpensive set of earbuds to use when viewing videos.

  • Students should be familiar enough with the device to use the basic functions.

  • It is helpful if students have access to download free apps.
