Congratulations to our
2016 Teacher of the Year
Ms. Melissa Rogers

Please join us in congratulating our 2016 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Melissa Rogers.  Ms. Rogers teaches 8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies at Snellville Middle. She is the proud mother of three beautiful children, all of whom attend school in the South Cluster.  She has been an educator for nearly 20 years with 13 of those years at Snellville Middle School.  Ms. Rogers believes, "When my students experience success, learn to believe in themselves and in their academic abilities, and know they can move mountains; the rewards of being a teacher become heartfelt and unforgettable.  I truly can't imagine any better feeling in this world."  Snellville Middle is fortunate to have such caring and dedicated professionals as Ms. Rogers.

From Dr. Twanitta L. Pouncey
6th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe we have completed four weeks of school. I hope as our newest members of the Snellville family, you have fully adjusted to middle school.

The students are continuing to transition smoothly into 6th grade and are finding their way around the building with no problems!

Please mark your calendar for some events that are planned for our students.  September 23-24, Early Release Conference days for Middle School students. This year all 6th grade students and a few 7th and 8th grade students will participate in Student-led Conferences. Letters and invitations will come home on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Please be sure to sign up for a time to meet with your child, so he/she can share with you how he/she has been doing in the academic classes.

October 6, 2015, is our annual Autumn Chat for 6th grade parents who are 1st time parents of middle schoolers.  Come chat with the counselor and assistant principal for an hour for updates and a question/answer session.

From Jeremy Reily
7th Grade Assistant Principal

Now that we are 5 weeks into the school year, schedules and classes have settled into a good routine. Most students have taken their first test in each of their classes, and many parents have had their first experience with standards-based grading in science, social studies and math. Intramural sports have started up on Friday mornings, and JLC Raider meets are beginning. Additionally, parent conference days are just around the corner, so be looking for communication on these (if you haven't received it already). If you have any questions that teachers aren't able to answer, I am the person to come to with any concern in 7th grade. My e-mail is jeremy_reily@gwinnett.k12.ga.us and my office phone number is (770)736-4464.

From Jeff Taylor
8th Grade Assistant Principal

On Wednesday, September 16 - Friday, September 18, all 8th Grade students will take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). This test measures development of abstract reasoning abilities through verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal assessments. CogAT results are used to identify students' areas of strength and weakness.

Testing will begin at 9:25 am each day and once testing begins, tardy students are not admitted to class. Testing will conclude by 10:30 each day, so we ask that any appointments be scheduled for the afternoon on these dates. Please note that we will be unable to disrupt the testing environment to retrieve students for check-out until testing is completed for the day.
