6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The National Geographic Geography Bee
Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee, prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. With a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Will be participating in the 2016 National Geographic Bee.
There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. To compete for advancement from the school to the state level, the winning student at each school must take
the written qualifying test. As many as 100 of the highest-scoring students in a state or territory advance to the state competition. The state Bee champion advances to the national
championship in Washington, D.C.
Snellville Middle School students in grades 6,7 and 8 will participate in classroom and school level Geography Bees this January. Students wishing to prepare for the Bee, or students who simply enjoy studying Geography, are welcome to attend Geography Bee Club Meetings on Thursdays, beginning October 8, at 8:15 am in Ms. Wurschinger’s room. No applications are necessary.

First Raider Meet of the Season
On September 19th over 40 JLC Raiders gathered at Shiloh High School and competed in their first meet of the season. Under the guidance of SFC Parkins and assistant Coach Sarah Foley they enjoyed every moment of the event, even the very hot temperatures. The Raiders came to have fun, experience camaraderie with their fellow JLC Cadets and learn good sportsmanship. At the end of the meet all members had competed and contributed to the over all success, which included 1 first place and 4 second places. At the end of the day SFC Parkins and Coach Foley were most satisfied with the huge smiles that the Raiders had on their faces when they left the field of competition.
by Cadet Staff Sergeant Tiffany Adams, JLC Corps Adjutant
Our JLC cadets did an outstanding job last Saturday at our first Raider meet of the year. The hard work and dedication that was displayed contributed to our success. We had a great time out there, despite the heat, but we learned how to have fun and not have our whole mindset on winning. Congratulations to our team who focused on the task, while ensuring they had fun at the same time.

The Snellville Middle School family appreciates the opportunity afforded to us by the staff at DonorsChoose, and we are extremely grateful to those contributors who read our proposal and donated so immediately and generously. We know that our students will make us all proud with their excellent behavior and academic success.
