6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,
Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.
Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

From Dr. Twanitta L. Pouncey
6th Grade Assistant Principal
Dear Parents,
First, I want to thank those parents who took the time to come out on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, for our Autumn Chat. We had a great turn out and good conversation among the parents.
We have completed half of our first semester. Just a reminder of our promotion criteria for 6th grade: Students must pass 5 out of 6 classes with Language arts and Math being two of the five each semester. Parents, check your child’s grades and make sure if your child is not being academically successful to send them to help days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Continue to speak with your child about being Responsible, Respectful, and Ready.
Please mark your calendar for some events that are planned for our students.
October 19, 2015, the Boy Scouts of America will visit our sixth grade classes. On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, 7:00-8:00, Boy Scouts of American Representatives will be here in the media center registering boys interested in joining the scouts.
Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4455, or email me at Twanitta_pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us, and visit my website at http://gcps-twanittapouncey.onmycalendar.com

From Jeff Taylor
8th Grade Assistant Principal
From October 19, 2015 to October 23, 2015, 8th graders will take the Iowa Assessments™.
The Iowa Assessments help determine how students are performing on nationwide standards. These assessments measure achievement in several important content areas including Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
The Iowa Assessments help teachers identify a student’s strengths and areas that may need additional emphasis. The Iowa Assessments also measure student growth and progress in the content areas assessed from year to year and may provide information about college readiness for older students. The assessments produce information that enables sound decision making and provides a focus for teachers to evaluate instruction.
Testing will begin at 9:25 am each day and once testing begins, tardy students are not admitted to class. Testing will conclude by 12:00 each day, so we ask that any appointments be scheduled for the afternoon on these dates. Please note that we will be unable to disrupt the testing environment to retrieve students for check-out until testing is completed for the day.
Title I Parent Involvement Workshop
Math Workshop for Parents
Snellville Middle School will host three Math Workshops for Parents. The focus of the math workshops will be to teach parents some strategies that they can use at home to support their child's academic success at school. Parents will be provided with resources including games and activities that they can use at home to support our goal of getting students to communicate and problem solve through mathematical reasoning.
