Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,
Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.
Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Great Things Are Happening At SMS!!!
Career Connections
Our 8th Grade students interviewed, networked, and gathered career insight at this year’s Career Connection on October 16th, 2015 at the Gwinnett Center. Students were presented with a 190 exhibition opportunities to learn about different careers.
Each career cluster was represented by multiple vendors from which students interviewed and gathered information. They represented themselves as young professionals in the school district and perused the venue with wide eyes and opened mouths.

Great Days of Service
SMS participated in the Annual Great Days of Service, a district food and toiletry drive, recognized from October 19 to October 23. Our Student Council set a school wide goal of 1,000 items and for healthy competition, they challenged each grade level to bring the most. The grade level that contributed the most would earn a 30-minute Walk-N-Talk. The final numbers were 6th Grade with 482, 7th Grade with 141 and 8th Grade with 384 for a total of 1,007 items. Congratulations SMS Teams and 6th Grade for winning the competition.
SMS Landscape Project
By Student Council Public Relations Specialist, Kamryn Mallett
Student Council and Peer Leaders ended Great Days of Service with a local school project. They got their hands dirty and took on the challenge to beautify our school grounds last Friday, October 23. They pulled weeds and spread pine straw near the front office area as well as planted a variety of flowers around the school’s electronic sign. By spring, our school will be lit up with beautiful flowers of various colors.

Middle School Peer Leader Conference
Several of our Peer Leaders attended this year’s conference on October 24, 2015 held at Summerour Middle. They attended three informational and inspirational sessions with others Peer Leaders from the district. However, Mr. Jon Valentine sealed the conference with a great presentation and demonstration about Global Competence. Our students were challenged to develop their diversity, communication, and problem-solving skills.

SMS Student Leadership Forum
Our 8th Grade Student Leadership Team, Peer Leaders, delivered 4 five to seven minute presentations on the topic of Student Leadership. Our students demonstrated their skills in research, presentation and communication. Their parents, teachers, and administrators, were in attendance to support their continued growth in leadership.

Parent Involvement Day
On Thursday, November 19th, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Snellville Middle School will be hosting its annual Parent Involvement Day. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, their child will perform better in school. The ultimate goal at Snellville Middle School is higher student achievement. Please come and be a part of your child’s education.
On Parent Involvement Day, parents will have the opportunity to observe their child in class. To make this an enjoyable experience for all, we ask that you please follow these guidelines:
-
Remember to sign in when you arrive at the school. There will be a table set up near the front office to sign in.
-
This is not a scheduled conference time with your child’s teacher. Please use this time for observation only.
-
In order to maintain the classroom atmosphere, please make arrangements for childcare of your pre-school children.
-
Please turn off all cell phones.
-
Unfortunately, parents will not be able to purchase a lunch from the cafeteria. While your child is at lunch with their classmates, please join us in the Parent Workshop Room to complete a Parent Perception Survey and enjoy a light lunch with us.
We hope you will be able to attend!
Parent Empowerment Fair
All parents of the South Gwinnett cluster schools are invited to attend the Parent Empowerment Fair on Thursday, November 12, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Click here for more details.
