Dear Parents,

Our JA fieldtrip was a success last week. Our students were dressed for success and behaved appropriately. We received positive feedback from the JA staff.  Great Job Sixth Graders!!!

We have 4 weeks remaining in our first semester. Just a reminder of our promotion criteria for 6th grade: Students must pass 5 out of 6 classes with language arts and math being two of the five each semester. Parents check your child’s grades and make sure if your child is not being academically successful to send them to help days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Continue to speak with your child about being Responsible, Respectful, and Ready.

Please mark your calendar for some events that are planned for our students and parents:

November 19, Parent Involvement Day. Parents please come out at 10:00 am to visit your child’s classes.

November 19, 8th grade Girls/Boys Basketball home game at South Gwinnett HS, at 5:00 p.m.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4455, or email me at Twanitta_pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

We are 14 weeks into the semester with four weeks left to go, and I know things are probably getting a bit stressful for your student. 7th grade begins to push students, and while this might not be what the students want to hear, every year for the next 4 years will be significantly harder than the last. This requires students to be more focused, organized, and mindful in order to succeed. Please help your student stay focused on academics by checking their grades on the portal regularly (daily if possible), make sure students get enough sleep, and making sure students are spending at least 1 hour a night on homework/studying. As far as homework goes, there often is less assigned homework as the grades/ages of the students increase, but there is more need to study.

Small, repeated study sessions are the most effective way for students to prepare for the final exam, which will be a significant part of their final grade for 1st semester. Students should spend at least 10 minutes per night on each of the four core subjects: math, science, language arts, and social studies. This can often be done through study apps like quizlet, or it can be done by going back through notes, or practicing math problems. Either way, students who fail to put this time in over these last four weeks, will not be as successful as those who do.

With regards to discipline issues, I am happy share that currently 96% of 7th graders have made it through the first 14 weeks without an administrative referral. In order to maintain this terrific percentage, though, students need to be focused in class. Several students are reaching their 5th step in our discipline process (having received warning, silent lunches, being cross-teamed to another teacher's class, etc. for minor classroom infractions). The 5th step is an administrative referral, which results in two days of In School Suspension (ISS). Their step level will be erased at the end of the semester and will start over in January.

Our 8th graders participated in the Career Connections event held Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Infinite Energy Center (formerly called Gwinnett Center).    Over 196 companies representing 440 employees were in attendance.  Our Comets represented us very well at this event!

Please continue to stress the importance of staying academically focused during middle school.  We are nearing the end of the 1st semester, and we’re hoping to recognize the tremendous efforts our students are putting in.

Our basketball season is right around the corner! We will open the season against Sweetwater Middle School on 11/19/15. Please come out and support our student-athletes!

Family Literacy Night

The Snellville Middle School Language Arts department would like to thank all of the families who attended our 2nd annual Family Literacy Night on October 29th.   It was a festive evening filled with interactive literary fun! This year, we offered six activity rooms that included everything from writing Halloween Haikus to descriptive writing activities like “Draw My Monster”.  Students were able to win tasty treats for completing each activity. Throughout the evening, everyone munched on freshly-popped popcorn and punch.

Language Arts teachers hosting the event as well as students were dressed up as famous book characters.  In order to freeze these moments in time, students and parents were able to have their "mugshot" made at our Banned Books Photo Booth...complete with funny props. Participants also received goodie cups with school supplies, stickers, treats, and other cool items.  We’re so glad that you and your family were able to come share literacy fun with us, and we hope to see you again next year!

Weekly Calendar
Parent Involvement Day

On Thursday, November 19th, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Snellville Middle School will be hosting its annual Parent Involvement Day. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, their child will perform better in school. The ultimate goal at Snellville Middle School is higher student achievement. Please come and be a part of your child’s education.

On Parent Involvement Day, parents will have the opportunity to observe their child in class. To make this an enjoyable experience for all, we ask that you please follow these guidelines:

  • Remember to sign in when you arrive at the school. There will be a table set up near the front office to sign in.

  • This is not a scheduled conference time with your child’s teacher. Please use this time for observation only.

  • In order to maintain the classroom atmosphere, please make arrangements for childcare of your pre-school children.

  • Please turn off all cell phones.

  • Unfortunately, parents will not be able to purchase a lunch from the cafeteria. While your child is at lunch with their classmates, please join us in the Parent Workshop Room to complete a Parent Perception Survey and enjoy a light lunch with us.

We hope you will be able to attend!

Stay Informed with the Parent Portal

If you are not already on the Parent Portal please stop by the office and sign up.   This awesome resource allows you to track your child's grades and attendance in real time from any computer.
