Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The Principal’s Update
Can you believe it?! We are already in the month of December. December is a short month and signifies that our first semester is coming to a close. Our students will have unit tests, projects to complete, winter concerts and final exams over the next few weeks. Please be sure to help your child pay close attention to exam dates and important deadlines for classes. Check the parent portal weekly and your child’s teachers’ eCLASS pages daily. Final exams will take place December 16th – 18th, 2015. Final exams are not given to students early. Please be sure that your child is present each day for final exams.
As our semester comes to a close, I would like to thank you for a wonderful and supportive first semester. Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Literacy Night, visited classes for Parent Involvement Day, attended our parent Lunch & Learn sessions and workshops, attended fall concerts, attended drill meets, shared kind words, chaperoned field trips, provided goodies to teachers, made sure your child was present and ready for school each day and shared the good news about Snellville Middle School. Again, thank you for a great first semester!
Sincerely,
Katise Menchan

Snellville Middle School is excited to announce Innovation Fair 2016. During the Innovation Fair students will identify a real world problem, design and construct a solution to the problem, then present their solution to a group of community members. The community members will then select the most appropriate solution for each problem.
How do students get involved?
Students will complete applications in early December. In January we will hold a day-long kick-off event where students will be introduced to the engineering / problem solving process, learn about the problems they can select from, select a problem and start the research process.
Students will work with volunteers from Snellville Middle School and the community as they research the problem, design a solution, prototype their solution, and prepare a presentation showing their proposed solution.
The project will culminate at our STEAM night (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) on the evening of March 3rd.
How can you help? We are in need of:
-
Problems - Real problems or issues that our students can tackle.
-
Volunteers - People with knowledge of engineering, marketing, manufacturing, communication, construction, finance, fabrication, sales, programming, etc…willing to act as presenters, mentors, and coaches.
-
Speakers for our kick-off event.
-
Donations of materials - dependent on the project solutions.
-
Judges to evaluate the student created solutions.
-
Donations of prizes for winning solutions.
For more information or to volunteer please contact Alan Johnston at alan_h_johnston@gwinnett.k12.ga.us or

Save the Planet – and Help our Robotics Program
If you have unused electronics or printer cartridges lying around you can donate them to SMS. We will then turn them in for recycling and earn a little money. Our robotics program is now taking donations of old cell phones, mp3 players, tablets, ink jet or laser cartridges, or old laptops that we can turn in to cash. You may drop items off in the front office or if you have a larger donation you may contact Alan Johnston at alan_h_johnston@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
Stay Informed with the Parent Portal
If you are not already on the Parent Portal please stop by the office and sign up. This awesome resource allows you to track your child's grades and attendance in real time from any computer.
