As a Middle School Counselor I am often asked by parents, What am I going to do with my Middle School Kid? Middle school is a trying time for middle school students as well as parents.  The article "What Parents Should Know: Adolescents are like Toddlers" is an excellent  resource to help parents survive the middle school years!  Click here for more information.

Check out the December edition of Middle School Years to see more tips and tricks to dealing with Tweenagers.

Hats off to our SMS Student Leadership Academy students. They have completed 3 sessions that dealt with topics of Personal Leadership, Leading Others, and Working together as Leaders.  Each  session provides  opportunities for students to work together in groups that lead towards learning something new about themselves and also learn how to be a better leader. This group is led by Mrs. Menchan.

It’s the season to give! SMS students are in the giving spirit. Student Council & Peer Leaders presents “Joy Maker Lattes”. They sold hot chocolate with toppings on Tuesday, December 1 before school on grade level hallways. So, thank you parents and students who supported the event.

In an effort to give back, Student Council and Peer Leaders are facilitating and coordinating a Joy Maker Challenge for our school. For more information, go to generationOn.org/joymaker.

They are raising funds to go towards a toy drive for some students at Britt & Norton Elementary.

Final Exams will be given Dec. 16 - Dec. 18. No final exam can be given early. Any student missing an exam will have a zero entered for that exam (10-20% of the grade) until the student takes the exam in January.
Promotion Requirements

Parents & students, please be reminded of the promotion criteria as the first semester is quickly coming to an end. 6th & 8th grade students must pass 5 of 6 classes each semester with Math and Language Arts being two of the five.

Let’s give our students a good final three-week push to complete all assignments, turn in missing assignments, attend Help Day, study for finals, and have good school attendance.

Sixth and eighth grade students, who have not been successful in meeting promotion criteria for this semester, will have the opportunity to attend AAP (Academic Assistance Program) on Saturdays beginning on January 23, 2016 from 8am to 1pm.

The first three sessions (January 23rd, 30th & February 6th) will be Language Arts or Social Studies. The final three sessions (February 13th, 20th & 27th) will be Science or Math. Each academic subject area class will be $60.

Please encourage your student to finish strong!

Save the Planet – and Help our Robotics Program

If you have unused electronics or printer cartridges lying around you can donate them to SMS.    We will then turn them in for recycling and earn a little money.    Our robotics program is now taking donations of old cell phones, mp3 players, tablets, ink jet or laser cartridges, or old laptops that we can turn in to cash.     You may drop items off in the front office or if you have a larger donation you may contact Alan Johnston at alan_h_johnston@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

Stay Informed with the Parent Portal

If you are not already on the Parent Portal please stop by the office and sign up.   This awesome resource allows you to track your child's grades and attendance in real time from any computer.
