Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back to 2nd semester.  I want to thank all the parents who came out on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, as we celebrated our students who made A’s and A’s and B’s in all classes during the 1st semester.

Parents, please make sure if your child received notification on his/her report card to sign up for AAP to return the forms. AAP is our Academic Assistance Program for students to recover failing grades. The classes begin January 23, 2016 for Language Arts and Social Students. Math and Science classes will begin on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

As a reminder, the promotion criterion for students in the sixth grade to be promoted to the 7th grade is:

Students must pass 5 out of 6 subjects each semester. Each connection stands alone. Language arts and math must be passed with a 70 or above each semester.

Continue to support our undefeated Boys and Girls Basketball Teams. Home games are played at South Gwinnett High School on Thursdays and Saturdays. If your child attends any Thursday night games, please have them picked up at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m.

Early Release conferences (student-led conferences) will be held on February 24 and 25. Please be on the look out for additional information.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4455, or email me at Twanitta_pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

With the start of a new semester we have a fresh start across the school. Grades start new (reminder=be sure to check the parent portal weekly), infractions in the discipline database started over (reminder: 5 infractions=administrative referral), and the weather has finally turned wintry (reminders: please put student's name inside coats and watch the GCPS website for updates on closings).

We are just over 50 days away from the Georgia Milestone Assessments, which in 7th grade are the promotion criteria. Students must pass all 4 tests -- not just language arts and math. If you have any questions about the Milestone tests, the GADOE website has the most comprehensive information, but also feel free to contact me.

We have also had a significant amount of schedule changes -- more than normal -- for the new semester. This is due to two reasons: (1) Mr. Hamilton, one of our math teachers last semester, left to pursue other opportunities, and (2) we had a large number of both withdrawal and registrations -- though not at the same time -- that left many of our classes unbalanced, in that some were too large and some were quite small. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as students and teachers settle into their new schedules.

As always, I want to be your contact for any issues. Please feel free to call me at (770)736-4464 or e-mail me at jeremy_reily@gwinnett.k12.ga.us. With all of the rescheduling finishing up this week, I should be able to be back to the normal time frame of calling or e-mailing you back within 1 day.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Comet community for your support of the basketball and cheerleading program here at Snellville Middle School.  I am excited to add that both of our basketball teams are undefeated, and we plan to go deep into the playoffs! Whether we are parents, teachers, staff or simply Comet supporters, we are proud of our students as they dedicate and commit themselves to success.

We encourage participation in athletics because it provides our students with important lessons for life such as teamwork, self-discipline, courage and fortitude.  The athletic department is grateful to our parents and members of the Comet community who provide unrelenting support, energy and enthusiasm for our student-athletes and coaches.
