The Principal’s Update: March

The month of March has already proven itself to be a very busy one. Our 5th graders from Norton and Britt Elementary visited SMS this week and learned a little about the exciting opportunities that await them next year in middle school.  On Friday, March 18th our students finished the last 3rd nine weeks of school by completing their District Interim Assessments in all of their core academic classes.  We are officially entering our last quarter of school, which means it will be a very busy time for everyone.

Be sure to log on to the parent portal weekly to check grades and your child’s academic progress.  Make sure that your child has no missing assignments, studies for his/her exams and takes advantage of help days.  Thank you for all that you do to support your child, your child’s teachers and Snellville Middle School.

Lunch and Learn for Parents

Thank you to all of the parents who attended our Lunch and Learn on the Georgia Milestones standardized testing and understanding student texting.  Following the lunch and learn, several parents shared how helpful the information was for them and how much they are looking forward to our hosting another one.

Faculty vs Students Basketball Game

Don’t miss our annual Faculty vs. Students basketball game on Thursday, March 24th.  Proceeds from the game will benefit our athletic department and support Relay for Life.

Miss Snellville Middle School Pageant

Our annual Miss Snellville Middle School pageant is on Saturday, March 19th at 3:00 p.m. at South Gwinnett High School.  The proceeds from this annual pageant supports Relay for Life.   Please be sure to come out and support our outstanding young ladies.

Sincerely,

Katise Menchan

Principal

Reminder about Deliveries to the Office

Please remember that, as stated in the Student Agenda, the front office does not accept items for delivery.  This includes PE clothes, athletic clothing/shoes, projects, cell phones, homework, instruments, books, cupcakes, balloons, flowers or any outside food.  This is part of our COMETS Be ready, Be responsible program and will help us limit the interruptions during academic time.

The purpose of the Snellville Middle School Council is to encourage the participation of parents and others within the school community to improve student achievement and performance. In addition, the School Council maintains a school wide perspective and serves as a link between the Snellville School Council and the community.    If you are interested in serving on the council you may click here to complete the form online or click here to download the nomination form.

Nominations will be taken through April 12th and voting will take place from April 18th – April 27th.

Comcast offers Internet service for families that meet certain criteria.    They also offer low cost computers and free computer classes and online tutorials.     Check out https://internetessentials.com/ for more information and to see if you qualify.

Earbuds?    Yes Earbuds

We are encouraging all students to have an inexpensive set of earbuds to use while in the computer labs or with school owned or their own devices.   Students do not need an expensive set of earbuds or headphones at school.

BYOD

As we continue to roll out BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at Snellville Middle School this year we would like to make parents aware of a few important items.

  • Students may bring their own Smart Phone, eReader, Tablet, or Laptop computer to school.

  • Teachers have the option of allowing students to use their device during class for specific instructional activities.

  • Students should always use the GCPS filtered Wi-Fi, they should never use their own 3G or 4G data plan.

  • Students are soley responsible for their device while on the bus, at school, and after school.

  • If students are allowed to listen to their device they should use earbuds but only in one ear.
