6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Welcome back to school from your Counselors!!

Welcome to a new school year, Comets! The beginning of a new school year is always so exciting. We are thrilled to reconnect with former students as well as meet our students new to Snellville MS. This year we are pleased to have with us this school year Ms. Aneisha Christie. Please join me in welcoming our counseling intern, Ms. Christie, to our team this year. She is a second year graduate student at Georgia State University. Ms. Christie has done her research and is excited about supporting our students in their academic success and implementing various student groups to make transition to and from middle school seamless.
Be on the outlook for information regarding Comet Buddies and Comet Leaders. The first group meetings will be held mid-September. The time and date will be announced closer to the meeting time. Homeroom teachers will select student leaders for both the Comet Buddies and the Comet Leaders. Students interested in these leadership groups should be putting forth great effort in class and showing outstanding leadership skills daily.

SMS Media Committee - Parents Wanted

We are in the process of assembling our 2016-2017 SMS Media Advisory Committee which plays an important role in the direction and content of our media collection. We would love for you to be a part of our team.
The purpose of our Media Advisory Committee is to review new materials (books, videos, etc.) before we purchase or add them to our collection. Your role would be to preview items - or lists of items that the media specialist compiles - based on professional reviews. We also look at general media center policy/procedure changes.
What is involved?
The majority, if not all, of our correspondence will be accomplished through e-mail. Although rare, should we have an item in our collection that is brought to our attention by a teacher, administrator, parent or student we will re-evaluate this item and determine its value to our collection. This may involve a majority of the members reading or viewing the item and participating in a panel to discuss the item.
This is a wonderful way to be a part of SMS! If you have any questions or are interested please e-mail Tiffanie Hitchcock at tiffanie_hitchcock@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
