Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe we have completed three weeks of school. I hope as our newest members of the Snellville family, you have fully adjusted to middle school.

The students are continuing to transition smoothly into 6th grade and are finding their way around the building with no problems!

Please mark your calendar for some events that are planned for our students.

Title I AP

From Jeremy Reily
7th Grade Assistant Principal

My name is Jeremy Reily, and I am the Asst. Principal that supports 7th grade students, teachers, and parents. If you ever need any information, do not hesitate to e-mail me (Jeremy_Reily@gwinnett.k12.ga.us) or call me at (770)736-4469. I am your point person for all things 7th grade, and if I don't know the answer, I will know where to find it!

As we are getting the year started, things have been going extremely well. Classes have really dived into the content, and many students either have just taken or soon will take their first test. With that in mind, let me tell you about the test-retest policy. In SS, MA, and SC, students will go through a cycle of testing, doing activities to remediate any area of weaknesses, and retesting for full credit. As always, grades will be posted in the parent portal (if you need to sign up for this, please stop by the front office whenever it is convenient).

Help days will begin after Labor Day -- LA/SS will be on Tuesday mornings, MA/SS will be on Wednesday mornings, and Connections will be on Thursdays. Help days start at 8:20, and students will be expected to sign in when they arrive.

Some have asked me about Milestones scores from last year. This should be available during the next two weeks in the portal. Sometime before Thanksgiving, we may receive paper copies to send home.

Here are a few things to ask your students about from the first three weeks: (1) Standards Based Grading, (2) the Minor Infraction Database, (3) Negative number rules, (4) the different Biomes, (5) Reading and Writing bootcamp, (6) and about the countries of the Middle East.

Again, please let me know if there is anything I can do to support you and your child. I look forward to an extremely successful year as we seek to teach and lead tomorrow's promise.

Regards,

Jeremy Reily

From Corine Warren
8th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear 8th grade Parents,

The 8th graders serve an important role in our school community.  As our student leaders, they assist in setting the tone for our school culture and act as role models for the other grades.

The 8th grade team strives to:

  • Provide our students with opportunities to make positive change in their community

  • Develop our students’ organizational and study skills they will need for high school

  • Prepare our students to deal with social and emotional challenges

  • Prepare our students to become problem-solvers and critical thinkers

  • Help our students solidify grammar, writing, research and analysis skills

The 8th grade team is looking forward to a stellar year.

From Lesley Grimes
Instructional Coach

Our Connections Department does a great job of connecting the AKS students are learning to real-life applications.  This year we are offering Band, Orchestra, Chorus, General Music, Art, Junior Leadership Corp, Engineering & Robotics, Health/Fitness, Physical Education, Peer Leading, Study Skills, and Spanish.  Each student has an opportunity to take two Connections classes each day.  One is in the morning and one is in the afternoon.  These classes are often some of the students' favorite classes since they are able to put their learning into action.  Keep on the lookout for schedules regarding performances and projects that will highlight your students' learning through Connections.  We are looking forward to this year.

SMS Media Committee - Parents Wanted

We are in the process of assembling our 2016-2017 SMS Media Advisory Committee which plays an important role in the direction and content of our media collection. We would love for you to be a part of our team.

The purpose of our Media Advisory Committee is to review new materials (books, videos, etc.) before we purchase or add them to our collection. Your role would be to preview items - or lists of items that the media specialist compiles -  based on professional reviews. We also look at general media center policy/procedure changes.

What is involved?

The majority, if not all, of our correspondence will be accomplished through e-mail. Although rare, should we have an item in our collection that is brought to our attention by a teacher, administrator, parent or student we will re-evaluate this item and determine its value to our collection. This may involve a majority of the members reading or viewing the item and participating in a panel to discuss the item.

This is a wonderful way to be a part of SMS! If you have any questions or are interested please e-mail Tiffanie Hitchcock at tiffanie_hitchcock@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.
