6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The Principal’s Update: September
Dear Parents:
We are just a few days away from the official start of the Autumn season and have already completed a full six weeks of school. I would like to personally thank all of our parents for your support during our budget reduction and teacher changes. Our students who have new schedules have done a fine job with the change and are adjusting well.
We are a school community that believes in student leadership and cultivating self-responsibility. Our students will begin preparing for their student-led conferences which will take place during Early Release on Wednesday, September 28th and Thursday, September 29th. During student led conferences, students will explain their progress toward or mastery of an academic goal as well as their work and learning habits. Students will justify their progress by leading their parents through a series of assignments from their academic classes. Student led conferences increases student accountability concerning their academic and learning behaviors, helps students to learn to communicate better and hone their critical thinking skills. Student-led conferences support our students in becoming responsible, independent thinkers and leaders.
Many of you are aware that our district is undergoing re-accreditation and all schools are required to submit information to the accreditation agency. We need your help in making sure that our school meets the required number of parent participants for accreditation. There is an accreditation survey required for parents to complete. It will take at least 20 minutes of your time and consists of approximately 40 questions. You will find below a QR code that you can scan on your phone and answer the questions. I would like to encourage my 6th grade parents and new parents to SMS to take a look at our school’s website and read some of our previous Comet Connections to familiarize yourself with what we do so that you can best answer the parent survey questions. Our returning parents should be able to comfortably answer the questions and share the good news about Snellville Middle.
We are also a very supportive Comet community and encourage our students and parents to attend home football games at South. Parents, please remind your middle school son or daughter that if he/she attends a football game at South without a parent that appropriate behavior is expected. High school football games are school sponsored events and inappropriate behavior could result in a school consequence when he/she returns to school. We expect our middle school students to be responsible and demonstrate Comets Pride in the community.
Lastly, our 8th grade students are preparing for the CogAT testing next week. Please be sure that your 8th grader is present at school during testing days and times. There is no preparation required for this test but we do ask that our students eat a good breakfast, power down electronics late at night, get a good night’s rest and do their very best.
Thank you for all that you do to support Snellville Middle School.
I am looking forward to another week of learning at SMS!
Sincerely,
Katise Menchan
Principal
