What's the Buzz?

We are excited about our new visitor management system. The new system requires all visitors to be "buzzed" into the school. This is the same system that has been installed at all of the elementary schools. This year middle school installation will be completed.

Our system is active as of today, Friday, September 30th. So you will have to ring the bell and be "buzzed" into the school.  Once you are buzzed into the school you must still follow our normal procedure of checking in/signing in to receive a visitor's badge.  Students were given flyers to bring home to parents with information regarding the visitor system.  To learn more about it, please click here.

Technology Update

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

As we continue to roll out BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at Snellville Middle School this year we would like to make parents aware of a few important items.

  • Students may bring their own Smart Phone, eReader, Tablet, or Laptop computer to school.

  • Teachers have the option of allowing students to use their device during class for specific instructional activities.

  • Students should always use the GCPS filtered Wi-Fi, they should never use their own 3G or 4G data plan.    Students will connect to the GCPS Mobile wireless network.

  • Students are solely responsible for their device while on the bus, at school, and after school.

  • If students are allowed to listen to their device they should use earbuds but only in one ear.

Google Apps for Education (GAFE)

Snellville Middle School is now a Google Apps for Education school.    All students have a Google Apps account that includes access to Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and a number of other Google services designed for education.     Students do not have access to email or Youtube through their Snellville Middle Google account.

One of the key advantages of using Google Apps is that students can work on assignments while at school using a school owned computer or their own device then continue working from outside of school on almost any device such as a tablet, Chromebook, computer, or smart phone.  Another advantage of Google Apps is the ability for students to collaborate on assignments.   Multiple students can work on and edit a single document.  The teacher has access to see exactly what each student in the group contributed.

Headphones or Earbuds

Students are asked to have an inexpensive set of headphones or earbuds to use while in the computer labs or with school owned or their own devices.   Students do not need an expensive set of earbuds or headphones at school.

8th Grade Washington DC Trip

Dr. Moon will sponsor the end of the year 8th Grade trip to Washington DC!  Dr. Moon will present the information to all 8th grade students next week, Monday -Wednesday. So please all interested 8th grade students and parents please attend the informational meeting on October 11th in the Cafeteria hosted by Dr. Vanita Moon.

Celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month
and Branch Out!

GCPS media centers are full of great resources for students, and access to even more resources is on the way! A new partnership between GCPS and the Gwinnett County Public Library (GCPL) will help students Branch Out! academically with full access to the print and digital resources of the county library system at any one of 15 branches around Gwinnett and online. Students who pre-registered during back-to-school activities will gain access in mid-September.

Parents that attended Curriculum Night at SMS were given Branch Out sign up forms.    Click here to download a form if you did not receive one.    Completed forms should be returned to your student’s homeroom or Language Arts teacher.

Weekly Calendar
The National Geographic Geography Bee

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee, prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. With a top prize of a $50,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Students from all 50 states, the

District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools will be participating in the 2017 National Geographic Bee.

There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. To compete for advancement from the school to the state level, the winning student at each school must take

the written qualifying test. As many as 100 of the highest-scoring students in a state or territory advance to the state competition. The state Bee champion advances to the national championship in Washington, D.C.

Snellville Middle School students in grades 6,7 and 8 will participate in classroom and school level Geography Bees this January.  Visit www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/ for more information and resources.

Morning preparation sessions for the SMS Geography Bee will begin October 4 @ 8:15 am, and meet two Tuesdays a month.  The sessions will be in Ms. Wurschinger’s room.  All students are welcome to attend!
