Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

We are excited about our first annual “The Promise” To Be Drug Free Color Walk, our newest school wide activity!
It has been created as a kick-off to our school and the nation’s “Red Ribbon Week.” During this activity, students will walk (exercise) while getting the opportunity to develop their social skills with peers and volunteers. We invite ALL students to participate in this fantastic event on October 21st from 3:00pm to 3:45pm.
Tickets are $10 to participate in the event. Click here to download the permission form. The first 200 participants will receive a free pair of “Color Walk” sunglasses. There will also be concessions sold during the event. If you would like to volunteer for the event you can find out more information and sign up by clicking here.
Also, students who bring a food drive for “Great Days of Service – October 17-21” will receive a “Color Walk” lollipop from the concessions during the event.
Career Connections
Our 8th Grade students will be attending the county’s career insight event “Career Connection” on October 28th, 2016 at the Infinite Energy Center. Students will have the opportunity to meet different professionals from many careers.
Great Days of Service – October 17th to October 21st
It’s time for the Annual Great Days of Service, our district food and toiletry drive, recognized from October 17th to October 21st. Our Student Council has set a school wide goal of 1,000 items. For a healthy competition, they are challenging each grade level to see who will contribute the most.
Fall Landscape Project By Student Council – October 25
Student Council will continue the tradition of keeping our school beautiful. They will get their hands dirty to beautify our school grounds on Thursday, October 25. So be on the lookout for the fruit of their labor by next spring - beautiful flowers of various colors.
SMS Leadership Academy
October is the Kick-Off of our SMS Student Leadership Academy! Once again, our student leaders at Snellville Middle School will participate in the SMS Student Leadership Academy. Last year, we had three powerful sessions with our leaders and we are looking to do the same again this year. We are looking to duplicate this again with the focus being "As a student leader, how you are 'The Promise of Gwinnett' in your school, home, & community."
PSAT for 8th Graders – October 26
Eight graders will be taking the PSAT this year. With this test, it is an opportunity to help educators and students figure out what they need to work on most so that they are ready for college when they graduate from high school. This is a great advantage for our students.
Weekly Calendar
Monday, October 10th is a student holiday.
What's the Buzz?

We are excited about our new visitor management system. The new system requires all visitors to be "buzzed" into the school. This is the same system that has been installed at all of the elementary schools. This year middle school installation will be completed.

Our system is active as of today, Friday, September 30th. So you will have to ring the bell and be "buzzed" into the school. Once you are buzzed into the school you must still follow our normal procedure of checking in/signing in to receive a visitor's badge. Students were given flyers to bring home to parents with information regarding the visitor system. To learn more about it, please click here.

Join us for our first Art in the Afternoon session on October 20th. This month students will sign up to create a fall inspired theme on stretched canvas. Click here to download the additional information and the permission form.
