6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents,
Wow! Time is passing us by. We have completed 9 weeks of school. We are half way completing 1st semester of the 2016-2017 school year. Teachers are now starting to identify students who may need additional interventions by inviting you to attend Student Support Team (SST) Meetings. As a committee, we discuss strengths, areas of concerns and interventions we will implement to help these identified students be successful.
The promotion criteria for students to be promoted to 7th grade:
Students must pass 5 out of 6 classes with a 70. Two of the five classes should be language arts and math.
Parents continue to work with your children in Being Ready, Being Respectful, Being Responsible.

Dear 8th grade Parents,
Autumn is here, and the new school year is in full swing. The 8th grade team has been working hard to make sure that our students are safe, supported, and prepared to learn. Our number one priority is our students’ safety. We realize that our students must be safe in order to learn. Parents, please assist us by reminding your student to follow the expectations that have been communicated to them.

Mark your calendar for the following events that are planned for our 8th grade students.
Eighth grade students will be participating in the administration of the PSAT 8/9 on October 26, 2016. The PSAT 8/9 establishes a baseline measurement of college and career readiness. It helps determine what students need to focus on most so that they are ready for college when they graduate from high school.
Eighth grade students will be attending “Career Connection” on October 28th, 2016. This event will be held at the Infinite Energy Center.
Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4461, or email me at Corine_O_Warren@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

We are excited about the instruction that is taking place this nine weeks at SMS. You will have an opportunity this month to learn more about the great things taking place at our Math Night and Literacy Night. The Literacy Night on October 27th is such a hit with the students since they are able to dress up in their Halloween costumes. The Cluster Math Night will be Thursday, October 20th from 6:30 until 7:45. Parents and students from SMS and Grace Snell Middle will come together to preview the mathematics and look at online resources you can use at home. You will even have a chance to purchase dinner from a food truck. The food truck will be at Snellville from 5:30 until 6:30, and each plate will be $8. It will include one entrée, 2 sides, and either tea or lemonade. Hope to see you there!

Congratulations, Mr. Jeremy Reily!
Please join us in congratulating Assistant Principal Jeremy Reily. Mr. Reily was selected to participate in the district’s highly selective Quality Plus Leader Academy 2016 Aspiring Principal Program (APP). The Aspiring Principal Program was established in 2007 to develop select Assistant Principals in becoming future principals and/or district leaders. Through the year long program, aspiring principals will become students again and work collaboratively in performance-based teams in a customized leadership development program.
Participants also participate in 90-day residency program. Mr. Reily will begin his residency on November 2nd. In his absence, we will have a retired Gwinnett County Assistant Principal and/or Principal to fill in during his residency and perform his duties.
Way to go, Mr. Reily!
