Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Weekly Calendar
The Principal’s Update: October

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the semester. Students completed their district interim assessments marking the mid-point of the semester. I encourage you to continue to monitor your child’s academic progress through the parent portal. Every parent has access to the parent portal to monitor and view their child’s grade. The parent portal is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
I’d like to thank all of the parents who attended our Parent Lunch & Learn session. Our parents left with a better understanding of middle school and a wealth of information to help their child experience success in middle school and beyond. Thank you to all of the parents, students, teachers and community members who attended our 1st Annual South Gwinnett Cluster Math Night last night. Our parents learned more about the upcoming math AKS and how to help their child to be successful in the next math units and beyond. Parents, teachers and students alike enjoyed purchasing dinner before math night from C-BO's BBQ & Southern Cuisine Food Truck. Please don’t miss our next parent night on Literacy. Our Literacy Night will be held on Thursday, October 27th. Students and parents are encouraged to wear their favorite costume to next week’s Literacy Night. We hope to see you there!
Our next career-oriented field trip will involve our 6th grade students in early November to the Junior Achievement(JA) Center at Discovery. I know our 6th graders will be ready and dressed for success! Parents, we are doing marvelous things at Snellville Middle! We will continue to challenge our students to become independent thinkers and life-long learners.
Aspiring Principal Program Selection

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Jeremy Reily, 7th grade Assistant Principal for his selection into the district’s Aspiring Principal Program. Each year the district selects highly effective assistant principals from a pool of applicants to participate in the Aspiring Principal Program. The program prepares assistant principals for future principal and district leadership positions within the county. As part of the year long program, Mr. Reily will participate in a 90-day residency at another school within the county. He will begin his residency on November 2nd and will return to Snellville Middle in March. In his absence, we will have retired Gwinnett County administrators to assume his duties and responsibilities. Way to go, Mr. Reily!
Career Connections – 8th graders ONLY

Our 8th grade students will attend the Career Connections field trip at the Gwinnett Civic Center on Friday, October 28th. Our 8th grade students are expected to dress for success—dress professionally. Each year our school is highlighted and recognized by district personnel and career vendors as having the most well dressed and behaved 8th graders at this event. We want to continue this expectation of our students this year. I want to thank you in advance for ensuring that your son or daughter’s permission slip is returned on time and they are dressed in appropriate professional attire. It takes us working together to ensure our children’s present and future success. It truly takes a village!
PSAT 8/9 Testing – 8th graders ONLY

Our 8th grade students will be participating in PSAT testing on Wednesday, October 26th. The PSAT helps determine which areas students need to work on most in order to be ready for college when they graduate from high school. Testing will begin at 9:25 a.m. and conclude by 12:30 p.m. Students should get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast at home or school and arrive to school on time. No student check-outs will occur during test administration. Please make any medical or dental appointments for your 8th graders after testing is completed each day. To learn more about the PSAT click here.
Spirit Wear

We wear Comets spirit wear at Snellville Middle every Friday. Be sure your child is able to join in the Comet spirit and show school pride! We are proud to be Comets!
Sincerely,
Katise Menchan
Principal
