Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents,
1st semester of the 2016-2017 school year ends on December 21. Teachers have started to identify students who may need additional interventions by inviting you to attend Student Support Team (SST) Meetings. As a committee, we discuss strengths, areas of concern and interventions we will implement to help these identified students be successful.

The promotion criteria for students to be promoted to 7th grade:
Students must pass 5 out of 6 classes with a 70. Two of the five classes should be language arts and math.
Parents, continue to work with your children in Being Ready, Being Respectful, and Being Responsible.
November 17, 2016, is our annual Parent Involvement Day from 9:45 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. Flyers went home last week. Please RSVP by Tuesday, November 15, 2016, if you haven’t already done so by calling Donna Copeland at 770-736-4449 with the number of parents attending, returning the bottom portion of the flyer to your child’s homeroom teacher, or by clicking here to complete the form. You will get an opportunity to visit some of your child’s classes and visit our Parent Center.

Parents,
We are excited about our focus on mathematics instruction at SMS this year. At our Math Night on October 20th, we highlighted some of the instructional strategies the teachers are implementing and shared digital resources for the students to use at home. Continue to check your math teacher's eCLASS pages for websites the students can use and gain immediate feedback. You can also encourage problem solving at home. Encourage your child to take part in cooking for the family. Following a recipe is a great way to practice measurements and connect mathematics to real world events. As adults, we experience problems everyday. We have to work to collect the necessary information to effectively solve a problem. Students have to be taught this skill so they will grow to be successful in life. Thank you for all you do to encourage your child to be a problem solver who doesn't give up when the solution isn't immediate.
