The Principal’s Update:January

Happy 2017 and welcome back to the 2nd semester of school!  It’s hard to believe that we are half -way done with the 2016-17 school year!  As you know, report cards went home with students on January 12th and now new grades have already started for this new semester.  Congratulations, to all of our parents whose child(ren) received recognition for their first semester academic accomplishments.  Please continue to work as a team with your child and his/her teachers to make the 2nd semester a success.

Here are a few key reminders as we move into second semester:

  • School wide Help Days:  Tuesday – Language Arts & Social Studies, Wednesday – Math & Science, Thursday – Connections.  Help Day begins at 8:15 a.m. Students should report directly to their Help Day session at 8:15 a.m.

  • Check the parent portal weekly.

  • Check your child’s My eClass page.

  • Please discuss with your child the importance of being a leader at SMS and keeping their hands, objects and unkind words to themselves each day.

  • Early release conferences will be held in February.  Student-led conferences are our standard format. Be on the lookout for conference information within the next few weeks.

  • Know your child’s promotion criteria.

Parents, we are doing marvelous things for our students at Snellville Middle! We will continue to challenge our students to become independent thinkers and life-long learners.  I am a very proud principal!

Parent Survey Time – State and District Surveys

The Gwinnett County Public School system is committed to providing students with the best possible education and school experience. Our students and staff are reaching higher heights each year at Snellville Middle. Please share with the district and the state about all the things that we do so well and any areas that we can grow by completing the following surveys:

GCPS RBES Parent Survey is available through the GCPS Parent Portal. If you have not signed up for the parent portal, please go to the GCPS website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us and click on the ‘Parents” tab for more information or contact the school to sign up for access.

Georgia Parent Survey is available at http://apps.gadoe.org/schoolclimate/parents.nsf/Survey.xsp  Select Gwinnett County Public Schools then select Snellville Middle School to complete the survey.

Your input is critical for our school’s continued success. Please be sure to complete the both surveys. Parent participation in the state survey helps our state CCRPI score.

Did you know? Snellville Middle School, received a grade of “B” from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, the only Title I school in Gwinnett County to receive this grade from the state. To help put this in perspective, our school received the same grade as the following non-title middle schools of Lanier, Trickum, Bay Creek, Creekland, Jones, and Duluth. Additionally, our student growth was higher than 88% of the schools in the state last year.  Snellville Middle also has been designated a Distinguished Breakout Middle School by GASSP for our academic achievement. We must share and tell our story!

Data Verification

Data verification forms will be sent home next Friday, January 27th with your child. Please check the phone numbers and contact information provided and make any necessary updates. The phone number and email information provided on the data verification is used to send important information regarding school, emergency, and/or weather updates to parents. Please be sure to sign and return the data form to school as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Katise Menchan

Principal,

Snellville Middle, GASSP Distinguished Breakout Middle School

National Geographic Geography Bee

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee, prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to motivate students to learn about the world and how it works. With a top

prize of a $50,000 college scholarship—plus other prizes—the contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Will be participating in the 2017 National Geographic Bee.

There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. To compete for advancement from the school to the state level, the winning student at each school must take

championship in Washington, D.C.

Snellville Middle School students in grades 6, 7, and 8 have participated in Classroom Bees, and the top scorer from each classroom took the SMS Geography Bee Semifinal Qualifying Test.  The top scorers from the Semifinals will compete on Wednesday, January 25 at 9:30 am in the Parent Instructional Classroom.  Parents and families of the Finalists are encouraged to attend to support them during the Final Round!
