Dear Parents,

Parents, please remind your students of the importance of Being Ready, Respectful, and Being Responsible.

We have concluded the Milestones Testing for grade 6. We have less than 25 days for the remainder of the school year. Parents, summer school applications will be sent home next month if your child must attend summer school for promotion. For planning purposes, summer school dates are June 13 thru July 7. Students are not in school on Fridays except for July 7, and have July 4 off.  Summer school is free, but transportation is not provided and will be held at Grace Snell Middle School.

As a reminder, the promotion criterion for students in the sixth grade to be promoted to the 7th grade is:

Students must pass 5 out of 6 subjects each semester. Each connection stands alone. Language arts and math must be passed with a 70 or above each semester.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4455, or email me at Twanitta_Pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

From Jeremy Reily
7th Grade Assistant Principal

I am so glad to be back home at Snellville Middle School after having had the opportunity to do a principal residency at another school for most of the year. As you well know, our 7th graders have finished Milestones testing and will have a couple of weeks to get ready for final exams.

Please check the school calendar and watch for e-mails, as there will be several events for Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Awards, etc. that will happen next month. Additionally, teachers will continue to contact parents regarding student progress and promotion, and our goal is that 100% of 7th grade earns the right to move on to 8th grade.
As always, please reach out to me if there is any issue or concern regarding 7th grade. I am rarely in the office, so the best way to contact me is through e-mail – Jeremy_reily@gmail.com, or you could try to call

(770)736-4469.

8th Grade Parents:

We are in our final week of End of Grade Milestones testing.  End of Course Milestones (Algebra I, Physical Science, and Biology) will begin May 2nd and end May 12th.  End of Course Milestones will be administered online. If you would like for your student to see what online testing is like, he/she can access a practice test online (http://gaexperienceonline.com/).

Please make sure that your child is on target for promotion to 9th grade.

About Promotion to 9th Grade:

  • To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed.

  • Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes. 8th grade students are also required to achieve Grade-level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements will be required to retest after summer school.

  • A Special Education student’s promotion is determined by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP).

  • Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan.

There are several important upcoming dates for our 8th grade students so please mark your calendars:

  • 8th Grade Formal Dance - Saturday, May 6th

  • 8th Grade End of Year Awards (Invitation Only) - Thursday, May 18th

  • 8th Grade Celebration/Fun Day - Friday, May 19th

Weekly Calendar
From Lesley Grimes
Curriculum & Instruction, & Connections

Even though a majority of the Milestone testing is done, the students still need to prepare for their end of semester exam.  In many class, this exam is up to 20% of their grade.  Here are some suggestions of how you can support your student at home.

  1. Make sure they are reviewing 10 minutes/subject each night.  Encourage breaks throughout this 40 minute period of studying.

  2. Make sure there is no other distraction during this time.

  3. Have them review in an open area where you can see them.

  4. There are many resources on eCLASS, usatestprep.com, etc. that they can use if they don't know where to begin.

  5. Quiz the students using any work/notes that they have.

  6. Have the student create a thinking map.  In the center of the page would be the course.  From there the students would branch out and write the topics they have learned.  From those sections, they can write specific details.

  7. Have the visual students do the thinking map, flash cards, or writing a review in different colors.

Thank you for partnering with us to ensure success for your student.  Our hope is that they will identify a strategy that works best for them in order to be lifelong learners.
