6th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear Parents,

We have 8 days remaining in this 2016-2017 SY. As we finish out the year, parents, please remind your students the importance of Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Being Ready. It is very important that your child finishes out this school year strong focusing on academics and acceptable behaviors.

6th grade Awards will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at 8:00 a.m.  in the old gym. Invitations were sent home if your child is receiving an award.

Final exams will be during the last week of school. It is important that your child is here for final exams.

Parents, summer school applications were sent home if your child must attend summer school for promotion. For planning purposes, summer school dates are June 13 thru July 7. Students are not in school on Fridays except for July 7, and have July 4 off.  Summer school will be held at Grace Snell Middle School. It is free and transportation is not provided.

As a reminder, the promotion criterion for students in the sixth grade to be promoted to the 7th grade is:

Students must pass 5 out of 6 subjects each semester. Each connection stands alone. Language arts and math must be passed with a 70 or above each semester.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at 770-736-4455, or email me at Twanitta_Pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

It's hard to believe that the school year is so quickly coming to a close. Thank you, parents, for all of your hard work in helping your students be so successful. We have more students with A's and B's this year than we have had in years.

Here is some information to keep in mind for wrapping up the year:

Final exams will be held on May 19th for Social Studies, Science is already completed, and Language Arts and Math will be on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. These will be at least 10% of your student's final grade in each class.

As a reminder, 7th grade students must past 5 out of 6 classes, with two of those being Language Arts and Math in order to be promoted to 8th grade.

Discipline consequences are escalated at the end of the year because of how absolutely essential these last few days are.

It is an honor to get to support the students of the 7th grade, and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help make these last 8 days a success. You can reach me by phone at (770)736-4469 and by email at jeremy_reily@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

8th Grade Parents:

This year has flown by, and we have less than a month of school left. We have finished Georgia Milestones testing, and we are looking forward to our students finishing strong with their final exams. I am proud of the accomplishments of our teachers and students.

The 8th grade students have had an outstanding year. We experienced several field trips and other incomparable learning experiences this school year. This would not have been possible without the support of our committed parents, fantastic faculty, and superb staff who work tirelessly to provide a quality education for our students.

There are several important upcoming dates for our 8th grade students so please mark your calendars:

  • 8th Grade End of Year Awards (Invitation Only) - Thursday, May 18th

  • 8th Grade Celebration/Fun Day - Friday, May 19th

  • South Gwinnett High School Summer Baseball Workouts Information Meeting  - Tuesday,  May 16th

  • South Gwinnett High School Rising 9th Grade Summer Camp - Deadline to register is Wednesday, June 14th

For additional information about any of the listed activities, please email me at Corine_O_Warren@gwinnett.k12.ga.us, or call me at

Have a safe summer!

As the school year winds down, it is important to encourage our students to maintain focus.  One way students can do this is practice 15-20 minutes daily for their final exams.  Exams will be given Friday, May 19th through Wednesday, May 24th.  There are resources on the students' eCLASS page as well as usatestprep.com for all math classes and high school science classes.  Click here for login access for usatestprep.com.

Over the summer the students should be reading.  This is a great time to explore literature that interests the students.  One suggestion is to select the same book as your child and discuss it as you read it.  This is a great way to learn more about their interests and provide opportunities for open communication.

If your student is a rising 8th or 9th grader entering Algebra 1, they will need to practice using the Algebra 1 Prep course on eCLASS.  This is a great way for students to start off the year strong.  For all other students, usatestprep.com will be available all summer long.

Thank you for all you do to encourage continuous academic growth at home and over the summer.
