From Lesley Grimes
6th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

We have had a wonderful start to our 2017-2018 school year.  In addition to learning subject related content, students learned school expectations, how to collaborate with their peers, and build relationships with each other. Our Curriculum Night was a great example of what your student has been experiencing the first couple of weeks.  In Math class on Curriculum Night, parents and students discovered how a trip to Chick-fil-a could be great practice for the skills they are learning this year.  In Language Arts, parents discovered the novels students would be reading this year.  In Science, parents, students, and siblings were able to explore the science and engineering practices by making slime.  Finally in Social Studies, parents had fun with an online kahoot quiz to review the topics of the year. Who was the real winner:  parents or students?

As we approach Labor Day, please be aware that student schedules could possibly change.  We want the best for our students, and some classes are above capacity.  Changes will only be made in the best interest of your child.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

I look forward to a wonderful year with the Class of 2024!

From Damian Powell
7th Grade Assistant Principal

My name is Mr. Damian Powell and this is my first year at Snellville Middle School. I am originally from Long Island, New York; however, I moved to Virginia when I was 14 years old. I went to college in Virginia and went on to teach High School Social Studies. I taught for eight years. I completed my MA in Educational Leadership and went on to become an administrator in North Carolina for ten years. I am new to Georgia, and so far, I must say that I love it. I truly feel at home!

I have a great passion for preparing our Comets for our global community. I work diligently to challenge students, staff, and the community to address the needs of all of our students. I consider myself as a servant leader. I encourage all students and parents to reach out to me if I can help make your time at Snellville even better.

In addition to working with our 7th-grade students and teachers as the new grade level Assistant Principal, I am also the administrator responsible for supporting Social Studies Curriculum,  Student Clubs, Intramurals, and Athletics. I am committed helping ALL students realize the Promise of Gwinnett!!

From Corine Warren
8th Grade Assistant Principal & Athletics

Greetings,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  I hope each of you had a great summer.  I am excited about this school year and looking forward to working with you and your eighth grade student.

Eighth graders serve an important role in our school community.  As our student leaders, they assist in setting the tone for our school culture and act as role models for the other grades.

The 8th grade team strives to:

  • Provide our students with opportunities to make positive change in their community

  • Develop our students’ organizational and study skills they will need for high school

  • Prepare our students to deal with social and emotional challenges

  • Prepare our students to become problem-solvers and critical thinkers

  • Help our students solidify grammar, writing, research and analysis skills

On Monday, September 18 – Wednesday, September 20, all 8th Grade students will take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). This test measures development of abstract reasoning abilities through verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal assessments. CogAT results are used to identify students' areas of strength and weakness.

The 8th grade team is confident that our students will be thoroughly prepared and Academy Ready by the end of this school year.
