The Principal’s Update: September Edition

Dear Parents:

We are just days away from the official start of the Autumn season and have already completed nearly six full weeks of school.

Snellville Middle is a school community that believes in student leadership and cultivating self-responsibility.  Our students will begin preparing for their student-led conferences which will take place during Early Release on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th.  During student led conferences, students will explain their progress toward or mastery of an academic goal as well as their work and learning habits. Students will justify their progress by leading their parents through a series of assignments from their academic classes. Student led conferences increases student accountability concerning their academic and learning behaviors, helps students to learn to communicate better and hone their critical thinking skills.  Student-led conferences support our students in becoming responsible, independent thinkers and leaders.

We are a very supportive Comet community and encourage our students and parents to attend home football games at South Gwinnett High. Parents, please remind your middle school son or daughter that if he/she attends a football game at South that appropriate behavior is expected.  High school football games are school sponsored events and inappropriate behavior could result in a school consequence when he/she returns to school.  We expect our middle school students to be responsible and demonstrate Comets Pride in the school community.

Lastly, our 8th grade students are preparing for CogAT testing which takes place beginning Monday, September 18th – Wednesday, September 20th.  Please be sure that your 8th grader is present at school during testing days and times.  There is no preparation required for the CogAT but we do ask that our 8th graders eat a good breakfast, power down electronics late at night, get a good night’s rest and be ready to do their very best.

For any of our SMS Comet families whose family members or friends are impacted by Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Harvey, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you for all that you do to support Snellville Middle School. Feel free to follow us on Twitter @SnellvilleMS and be a part of all the latest news and excitement!

Teaching, Leading and BELIEVING in Our Students,

Weather Updates & School Closing - Hurricane Irma

At this time, we do not know the extent of the impact Hurricane Irma may have on Gwinnett County Public Schools. School system leaders are making plans and will modify these plans as we get better and more timely information. Any changes to school schedules next week will be communicated using GCPS' normal communication channels (SchoolMessenger, websites, social media, and local news media) once we have more information and those decisions are made.

Any schedule changes for extracurricular activities next week will be communicated by the district and shared by coaches and sponsors as decisions are made.

How are decisions made to cancel school?

The superintendent makes the decision about school closings based on a cross-divisional and cross-agency effort, with information from public safety officials, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Gwinnett County officials, and the state Department of Transportation. School district officials will be meeting with these groups throughout the weekend and next week to ensure we have the best information possible.
