From Lesley Grimes
6th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

Since we have attended school for 6 weeks, it is time to check on our students' progress.  You will be receiving information Monday about Early Release Conferences. These will take place on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th.  The students do a great job preparing materials to share their progress and areas of growth.  It helps teach them about taking ownership of their learning in addition to having confidence, speaking clearly, displaying good eye-contact, and other important 21st century skills.  There will be a link on the school website starting Monday, September 18th, so be sure to sign up for a time.

We also have an exciting in-house field trip coming up October 17th and 18th.  The students will participate in a gem mining adventure that will help bring the Science content to life.  Participation is $10 per student.  Be looking for information about this great opportunity coming home on Monday, September 18th.  Please contact your child's Science teacher if you have any questions.

We are off to a fantastic start with our Comets Clubs and Activities this Year! SMS boasts over thirty clubs and activities ranging from Student Council and Peer Leadership groups to Robotics, Art Club, and Athletics. There is something for everyone at SMS! Please see our web site, under Students, for a full list of ways to get involved.

We just completed our Cheerleading try-outs. After an intensive three-day clinic, twenty fabulous young ladies made the squad, along with two managers.  The talent was vast, but the hard decision of determining the 2017-2018 team was left up to five off- campus judges. Our girls looked great and displayed excellent motion and energy. After an anonymous numerical score tally, and an evaluation of positive academic performance and behavioral conduct, we selected the team.  As she enters her second year at SMS and our Cheer Coach, we are anticipating a banner year for our awesome Coach Alexis Ross!

We are also excited about upcoming Boys and Girls Basketball. Nick DeLoach is joining us as our new Head Girls Basketball Coach, and Chad Riley is our new girls Assistant Coach. Coach Mike Dunn is returning for his fifth year as the Boys Head Coach.  Both teams are poised to make the playoffs for the fourth straight year in a row!  Girls try-outs are from October 16-20 and Boys try-outs are from October 23-27 from 4:30-6:00. Come on out and show your skills!

Lastly, we want to encourage all Comets to come out and participate in Intramurals. We have had more than 150 students sign up. Over 90 students attend basketball on Mondays and Wednesdays and 50 plus participate in Soccer on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday mornings are reserved for 8th Graders. Coach Riley put it best when he said, “get active and get involved!”

8th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear 8th Grade Parents:

Your child will be participating in the 2017 administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) which measures students' verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning abilities.  The results of this test will help assess how well your child is performing and assist with plans to meet your child's academic needs.

The administration will occur as follows:

  • Monday, September 18, 2017: Verbal - Sections 1, 2, & 3

  • Tuesday, September 19, 2017: Quantitative - Sections 4, 5, & 6

  • Wednesday, September 20, 2017: Nonverbal - Sections 7, 8, & 9

Thank you for making sure your child is present and on time each of these days. Our staff wants to provide your child with the best opportunity to be successful. Since the formal testing environment cannot be duplicated, it is important that your child is at school during these scheduled test days.  Once testing has begun each day, no child will be allowed to enter the classroom tardy.  Be sure to plan any medical or dental appointments after 12:00 p.m. on testing days.

Thank you for your support during this important testing time period.

The main administration will begin on Monday, September 18, through Wednesday, September 20. It is very important that your child is present and on time each of these days.

  • Eat a healthy breakfast

  • Be at school on time (8:50-9:15)

  • Be prepared (bring number two pencils and if you wear glasses, wear them)
