The Principal’s Update: October Edition

Dear Parents:

It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the semester. Students will complete their district interim assessments this week marking the mid-point of the semester.  I encourage you to continue to monitor your child’s academic progress through the parent portal.  Every parent has access to the parent portal to monitor and view their child’s grade. The parent portal is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

I’d like to thank all of the parents who attended our Student led parent conferences last month. Nearly half of our entire student body population had parents attend a student led conference this year! This is a testament of our supportive and positive parent and community partnership.

Parents, you don’t want to miss our annual Literacy Night. Join our students and teachers for an evening of Literacy Fun for the whole family.  Students and family members are encouraged to come dressed as a character from their favorite book.  Our Literacy Night will be held on Monday, October 30th  at 6:00 p.m. We hope to see you there!

PSAT 8/9 Testing – 8th graders ONLY

Our 8th grade students will be participating in PSAT testing on Wednesday, October 25th.  The PSAT results can be used to determine gifted placement for high school and content areas students need to work on most to be ready for Georgia Milestones, high school and beyond. In an effort to help familiarize our students with the format of the test, we have been practicing during Academy Connection Time.   Please encourage your son or daughter to do his or her very best on the test.  Testing will begin at 9:25 a.m. and conclude by 1:00 p.m.  Students should get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast at home or school and arrive to school on time.  No student check-outs will occur during test administration. Please make any medical or dental appointments for your 8th graders after testing is completed each day.  To learn more about the PSAT click here.

Share the Good News!

Each year our parents, students and teachers have the privilege of spreading the good news about Snellville Middle School.  Faculty and Staff are stopped frequently by parents (and grandparents) who are proud their children attend our school.  There are only a few times in the school year when we can share our thoughts and be counted.  Within the last year, our school has been recognized by the state of Georgia and the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals for outstanding academic progress and achievement. Our expectations for our students to be leaders in and outside of the classroom, our high academic and behavioral expectations coupled with caring and committed teachers is the foundation of our drive for excellence.

A few SMS Highlights and “Bragging” points:

  • 100% of our 8th graders enrolled in the High School Biology course achieved Distinguished; Outranking 8th & 9th graders in Biology across our entire district!

  • Our school was recognized by the GASSP as a Distinguished Break-Out Middle School for student academic achievement and progress.

  • Leading middle school Junior Leadership Corps program in the district.

  • Conducted over 300 student-led conferences to help students become responsible leaders in their education and practice 21st Century soft-skills for College and the Workplace.
