6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Classroom Lessons

Our 6th grade students were able to finish our lesson on What is Success? Students learned what it means to have a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. Students were assessed on their mindset towards school and then encouraged to develop a growth mindset. This activity can be summed up with a quote from Tim Duncan, "Good. Better. Best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better, and your better is best."
This month we were happy to spend time with our 7th Grade students. We made peanut butter & jelly (PB&J) sandwiches! Students made PB&J sandwiches and wrote the instructions on how to make them. Our students then had to explain how to make a PB&J sandwich to a person from a foreign country. Our students quickly discovered how easily they made assumptions about someone else’s knowledge versus their own. The experience was an ideal segue into helping our students learn about stereotypes and their personal identity.
Lastly, we spent time familiarizing our 8th grade students with the format and content of the PSAT 8/9 during their classroom guidance lessons. Our 8th graders appreciated the insight and felt more confident when they took the exam on October 25th.
We are two months away from the end of first semester, so it is important that we encourage students to ensure that they are giving maximum effort and embracing the challenges of middle school to ensure their success.
