Congratulations to Mr. Poss, our Media Specialist, who won a grant from Walton EMC for nearly $8,000 to transform our Media Center into a 21st Century reading and learning space for students.

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

It is that time of year when everyone should be reviewing. Final exams will be 12/19 and 12/20.  Your students should be reviewing daily to prepare for those exams.  Please contact their teachers if they indicate that they do not have anything to review.

Academy Connection Time wrapped up this week.  The students did an excellent job presenting their projects and learning based on the five academies at South Gwinnett High School.  They are Business and Entrepreneurship; Health and Human Services; Law, Leadership and Public Service; Media Arts and Communication; and STEM. Students will be able to know more about the academies, the careers in those academies, work collaboratively with their peers, and develop communication skills.  Ask your student what they are learning during this time.

When we return from the break, the students will be going on a field trip to JA Biztown.  This is an exciting time for the students in 6th grade.  They have been and will continue to do lessons that will help them be prepared for this experience.  It is one more way that we can provide real-world experiences for our students.

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday.

Dear 7th Grade Parents,

We are about two weeks from bringing the first semester to a close. Time moves like a COMET when you have fun teaching and learning!

Science is busy wrapping up the last unit before preparation for the final exam. The past two weeks students have learned about selective breeding and genetic engineering; both are responsible for much of the food we see in the grocery stores today!

Social Studies is currently learning about the physical and human geography of the continent of Africa.  Next, they will examine the similarities and differences among three major African ethnic groups - Arabs, Bantu, and Swahili.   The Unit 4 Assessment will be at the end of next week.

Language Arts students are spending the last few weeks of the semester unwinding from an intensive writers' workshop with the help of reading the first novel of the of the year Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton. Former students' have described this unit as their absolute favorite! Students are engrossed in powerful discussions that allow them to make connections with the lives of fictional characters and the events that drive the story set in the 1960s.

In Math, students are learning to use proportional reasoning to increase or decrease the serving size of recipes. They are also learning how to determine the scale for similar figures.

As the end of the first semester approaches, please be sure to monitor your student’s academic progress. Semester Final Exams are on December 19 and 20. Reach out to teachers and help your students stay organized. Encourage your child to make up missing assignments and to attend remediation as necessary. Remember, the final exam is 10% of the final class grade.  The end of the semester is a critical time, but with the home and the school working together, we will get all of our 7th Grade Comets over the finish line!!

Athletics Update

Our Basketball season is off to a magnificent start! Both our Boys and Girls teams are working hard and improving every day. Our coaches consistently push our athletes to grow and learn as they enhance their skills and it shows. We are working hard to bridge the gaps between academics, sportsmanship and discipline. We are proud that our student athletes understand that they have a unique responsibility to be leaders on campus as well as on the basketball court. Lady Comets rank in 1st place with a 4-0 record and our Boys currently rank in 5th place with 3-1 record in the Eastern Division. Our next home game is on Thursday, December 14th against our biggest rival Grace Snell at South Gwinnett High School. Please come out and support your team.

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

Eighth grade students attended “Career Connections” on November 16, 2017.  Our students were dressed for success and received numerous compliments about their appearance and conduct. The students networked and interviewed professionals in 17 different career clusters.  The event exposed our students to potential careers. This experience will allow our students to make a more informed choice when entering 9th grade at an Academy high school.

The 1st semester ends on December 20, 2017. Final Exams will be held December 19 and 20.  For additional information regarding Final Exams, please read the “Testing” section of this newsletter. It is very important for our students to be present and ready for assessments each day as we finish the first semester.

Teachers have been working diligently to identify students who need additional supports and have been providing interventions and needed supports.  Communication between the home and the school remains a top priority for Snellville Middle School. We believe that parental involvement is key to our students reaching their academic potential. Please continue to communicate with your student’s teachers and use our portal system to keep up with current grades and assignments. Encourage your child to come to Help Day if he/she needs additional help.

8th Grade Promotion Criteria:

  • Students must pass five (5) out of six (6) classes.

  • Two (2) of the classes must be Language Arts and Math.

Lastly, our students’ safety is our number one priority. We realize that if students do not feel safe they are unable to learn.  Please remind your student to adhere to the Common Expectations that have been shared with them.
