The Principal’s Update: January

I’d like to officially welcome everyone back to the 2nd semester of school!  It’s hard to believe that we are half way done with the 2017-18 school year!  First semester grades are finalized and report cards will go home with students on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.  Students who will be recognized for All As or All A’s and B’s for first semester will receive an invitation to participate in the awards ceremonies this week.  Our 6th grade awards ceremony is Wednesday, January 17th, 8th grade is Thursday, January 18th and 7th grade is Friday, January 19th.  Sixth grade invitations went home with students last Friday. 7th & 8th grade invitations will go home with students on Tuesday along with report cards.  Also, any students who are at risk for not meeting the promotion criteria based on first semester grades will receive information regarding Academic Assistance Program and grade recovery in their report cards.

Here are a few key reminders as we move into second semester:

  • Check the parent portal weekly.

  • Check your child’s My eClass page.

  • Please discuss with your child the importance of being a leader at SMS and keeping their hands, objects and unkind words to themselves each day.

  • Early release conferences will be held in February.  Student-led conferences are our standard format. Be on the lookout for conference information within the next few weeks.

  • Know your child’s promotion criteria.

Please continue to work as a team with your child and his/her teachers to ensure that the final semester is a success.

Digital Learning Day

Our first district wide Digital Learning Day on January 8th was a learning success. Our district network did slow down periodically throughout the day for students but considering that Gwinnett County Public Schools has nearly 180,000 students and 11,000 teachers accessing the network, it went well.  I would like to thank you for your support and flexibility during the Digital Learning Day (DLD).  It could not have been successful without you!

Comets Spirit

Congratulations to our Comets, Lady Comets and Cheerleaders for their recent wins! Please come out to support our teams. Our next game is Tuesday at Archer against McConnell MS. We need our Comets Fans to fill their stands and take over! Hope to see you there!

Parent Survey Time – District Survey

The Gwinnett County Public School system is committed to providing students with the best possible education and school experience. Our students and staff are reaching higher heights each year at Snellville Middle. Please share with the district about all the things that we do so well and any areas that we can grow by completing the following survey:

GCPS RBES Parent Survey is available through the GCPS Parent Portal. If you have not signed up for the parent portal, please go to the GCPS website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us and click on the ‘Parents” tab for more information or contact the school to sign up for access.  Your input is critical for our school’s continued success. Please be sure to complete this survey.

I hope that you took the opportunity to celebrate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King and reflect on his life and legacy today. We are certainly grateful for his life’s work and ultimate sacrifice.

As we move into our final semester, we will continue to challenge our students to become independent thinkers and life-long learners.  I am a very proud principal!

Sincerely,

Katise Menchan
