Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

6th grade parents,
We are looking forward to Early Release and Student Led Conferences. The students will be spending the next two weeks preparing their portfolios to show you. Each student will be asked to highlight their strengths and identify areas for improvement. This goal setting process is a life-long skill that will benefit them in the future. We hope to see you on February 21st or 22nd. Be sure to contact your child's teacher if you would like a one-on-one conference.
The students will be covering a variety of topics in their classes the next few weeks. In Social Studies they are learning about modern day history. In Language Arts the students are finishing reading Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis. The movie would be a great way for you to discuss the novel further. In Science the students will begin a severe weather project. There will be several hands-on labs during this unit. During this time they will discuss how heating of the land and water affects weather. In Math the students will be finishing their statistics unit and discovering how data can be misleading. As you can see, there are many exciting learning opportunities ahead for our students.
Thank you for encouraging your son/daughter to continue the learning experience at home. We appreciate all you do to support SMS. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

In order to maximize the learning experience, students will now be given infractions for being tardy to class. Please encourage your son/daughter to get to class prior to the tardy bell. Students should be in class as much as possible to reach their highest potential.

7th Grade Update
We are all about the business of teaching and learning in 7th Grade. Our students are doing some amazing things in their core classes.
Language Arts students are reading the coming of age book, "The Outsiders," by S.E. Hinton. Students can easily relate to the adolescent adventures of the main character, Ponyboy Curtis, who is both a good student and runs track. Be sure to ask your child about the big ideas and themes of this iconic classic.
Math students are learning about probability using manipulatives like dice, spinners, playing cards and coins to simulate real-life scenarios and write probability statements. They are even predicting different outfit combinations based on their wardrobes as a creative way to analyze and interpret data to explain probability.
In 7th Grade Social Studies, students will be completing a Project Based Learning unit during which they will research the impact of government stability on the standard of living across Africa. Students will organize their own Non-Governmental Organization that will work in Nigeria, Kenya, or South Africa to raise the standard of living for the citizens of those countries.

Lastly, our 7th grade Science field trip to Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center is coming up on Tuesday, March 20, 2018. Teachers will hand out permission slips next week. The trip will cost $17.00 per student and they can sign up for the trip between Feb.19th-23rd on My Payments Plus. Our Comets will go on a guided walk in the forest and explore local flora and fauna. Students also sharpen their classification skills by observing skulls from various classes of Georgia animals. Additionally, they will learn to classify native trees using a dichotomous key and engage in discussion that will focus on the impact of exotic and invasive plants.
Athletics Update
The Snellville Middle Comets have had a banner Basketball and Cheer season! Both basketball teams fully exemplify teamwork, grit and tenacity. Our boys made it to the first round of the playoffs. Our girls advanced to the Eastern Division Championship with a record of 15-0 and soundly defeated McConnell Middle School with a score of 34 - 15. Now we are off to the County Championship! We will play Pinckneyville for the County Championship on Thursday, February 15th at 5:30 pm at Brookwood High School. Go COMETS!!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

Second semester has gotten off to a great start, and 8th grade is working hard to finish the school year strong. We have a great deal of events and activities that are scheduled, so please keep your eyes open for upcoming events.

As always, thank you for your support and please continue to encourage your student to adhere to our school-wide expectations (both academic and behavioral).
