6th grade parents,

The students have had a busy week finishing up midterms and celebrating STEAM Night.  If you were unable to attend STEAM Night, be sure to look out for the information next year.  As the semester progresses, we will begin reviewing for the Milestone End of Grade Assessment in Language Arts and Math.  It is important that the students keep the concepts fresh in their mind.  Be sure to ask them about their strengths and weaknesses in those classes.  This helps the students be reflective, and they are encouraged to become self-advocates for their education.  There are many resources on eCLASS that you can have them work on at home as well.

We also have things to celebrate.  On Friday, March 16th, students with all A's and B's will be participating in a Walk and Talk during Academy Connection Time.  Then on March 30th, students will have a chance to watch The Watsons Go to Birmingham since they have finished reading the novel.  We are looking forward to celebrating the students and all of their hard work.

Thank you for all of your support as we continue to strive for excellence.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear 7th Grade Families,

It is hard to believe that Spring is right around the corner. We have had a blast this year in 7th grade thus far, but we need to finish STRONG.  We are just in the process of taking interims. Thank you for supporting your child as they prepared. Our teachers continue to focus on teaching and learning through meaningful and relevant instruction. We love to share what we do!

Math is currently collecting and analyzing real-life data to compare populations and make inferences about populations in math. To bring the content to life, students will estimate the population of SMS students who prefer pizza to chicken nuggets for lunch using data collected from a random sample of students in each grade level. Now that’s COOL Math!!

In Social Studies, students are investigating cultural and economic practices that lead to high levels of pollution of the air and water in China and India. Students will make connections with the need to be responsible Global citizens by taking care of finite natural resources!  The next test will be on March 16, followed by in-class opportunities for remediation and extension on Unit 7 - Geography of South and East Asia.

Language Arts students are reading "The Outsiders," a book written by a teenager about teenagers. Students are determining a thesis and writing a literary paper about the book. Students will practice critical thinking, prose organization and style, and citation skills as they complete their papers and watch the movie over the coming weeks. The students find the book fascinating and relatable.

In Science, students will start with a new unit on Biomes after the midterm and explore the abiotic and biotic features of these biomes. The kids are most excited about the 7th-grade field trip just around the corner, on Tuesday, March 20th!

Athletics Update

Being a soccer aficionado, Coach leaped at the opportunity to expose our students to the most popular sport in the World!!  He conducted tryouts in January and formed boys and girls teams, both of whom together participated in five scrimmages. After honing their skills through successful scrimmages against other middle schools, our soccer players will compete in the Futbol Classic Tournament for Gwinnett County Public Schools. The games will take place at Bryson Park in Lilburn, GA., 5075 Lawrenceville Hwy Lilburn, GA 30047. Please see the times below. Come on out and support our Comets ALLSTARS!!

Dear Eighth Grade Parents,

Thank you for your assistance with completing the rising 9th graders’ registration forms.  8th grade is working hard to finish the school year strong.  We have a great deal of events and activities that are scheduled, so please keep your eyes open for upcoming events.

As a reminder, the promotion criterion for students in the eighth grade to be promoted to the ninth grade is:

To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester.  Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed.

Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year.  Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment.  Students who do not meet either of these State promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

Students who do not meet grade level proficiency on the Reading and Vocabulary domain and/or achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics EOG Assessment, but who have a yearlong average that is passing (70 or higher) in the corresponding course (Language Arts or Math) may be promoted.

A Special Education student’s promotion is determined by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan.

Upcoming Events:

March 22     Career Day

March 28 - March 30    Junior Achievement Field Trip, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Discovery Center Gwinnett

Weekly Calendar
Georgia parent Survey

Each year, the state of Georgia asks our students, teachers and our parents to complete a Health Survey related to the overall climate of Snellville Middle School.

For the last 3 years, Snellville Middle has received a 4 out of 5 climate star rating.  We receive this high rating because our parents share about the great things happening at Snellville Middle by participating in this survey required by the state.

Please take a moment to complete this parent survey so we can continue earning a 4 or 5 star Climate rating for our school.  We deserve it!

Greetings,

Student safety is a top priority at Snellville Middle School. Each month students practice a type of emergency situation that could possibly occur during the school day. On March 8, 2018  SMS with the support of the Snellville Police Department conducted a simulated Emergency Preparedness Hard Lockdown. A Hard Lockdown indicates the threat is inside the building. The drill was completed in a timely and orderly manner. The students were attentive and precise as they followed the communicated procedures. The students did an outstanding job!

Go Comets….
