6th grade parents,

6th Grade Parents,

Throughout the 2017-2018 school year our students have been highlighted in many ways.  The students have participated in 5 Walk and Talk’s for either good behavior or maintaining good grades.  The 3 winners in the Speech Competition with Grace Snell and South Gwinnett High School students were all 6th graders from SMS.  The students have also enjoyed 3 in house field trips and one to JA Biztown.  Transition to middle school can be difficult for some students, but our students at SMS have done an outstanding job.

As our students transition to 7th grade, keep encouraging them to practice reading, writing, and their math skills.  Students can win a Chromebook if they enter the Gwinnett County Public Library Summer Reading Program. There are many other wonderful events for teens on the calendar at the local library.  Even though the students may not have access to their teachers’ eClass page, they can always use the practice site usatestprep.com.  If a student practices once or twice a week completing a small test or general practice on their weak standards, it will keep the math concepts fresh in their minds.  (Click on the links for more details.)  With the right resources at our students’ fingertips, they will start off the year with success.

It has been a pleasure to be your child’s assistant principal this year.  Even though they will go onto the next grade level, they will always be special to me.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns in the future.

Have a wonderful end of the school year and summer.

Dear 7th Grade Families,

It is hard to believe that the end of 2017-2018 school year is upon us. We have had a great year, but it is not over yet. Our kids need to finish strong, and we need to work together more than ever! Teachers are starting to review for finals and other year-end activities.

In Science, students are gearing up to take their last Unit Test this Friday! This Unit Test will cover ecological relationships between living organisms. The science team has presented students with many real-world examples of organisms interacting, competing for resources and many fascinating examples of predator-prey relationships occurring on our planet. It is an exciting World out there!

Language Arts students are finishing Unit 3 of Units of Study. They are preparing to debate the benefits of competitive sports for middle school-aged kids. Students will present in groups of three with each contributing a reason and three pieces of evidence to support their greater claims.

The Math team is currently reviewing for Final Exams by implementing technology, scavenger hunts, and classroom team activities. The team is also starting to introduce students to 8th Grade Math concepts and skills. We like to get ahead of the curve!

In Social Studies, students are wrapping up the last unit, learning about the governments and economies of China, India, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea.  One of the topics that teachers are highlighting in this unit is comparing the rights and freedoms of US citizens with citizens of the countries of North Korea and China.  The final test of the year will be on May 17.

As you can see, in the following days all 7th Grade content areas will engage in an in-depth review of 2nd Semester AKS to prepare for the Final Exams on May 22 & 23. There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS, so it is imperative that your child is present on exam days.  Please be sure to review with your students, check their notebooks, contact teachers and look at eCLASS.

In addition to finishing strong academically, please remind your child that we expect them to be on their best behavior. Students tend to get a bit antsy as the weather breaks, and summer vacation is on the horizon. Lastly, we hope to see you at the 7th Grade Awards Program on May 17th at 8:00 am in the Old Gym  (by Invitation Only).

As always, please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.  Also, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter @SnellvilleMS to see more of the great things going on in Comet World!!!

Eighth Grade Parents:

This year has flown by, and we have less than a month of school left. We have finished Georgia Milestones testing, and we are looking forward to our students finishing strong with their final exams. I am proud of the accomplishments of our teachers and students.

The 8th-grade students have had an outstanding year. We experienced several field trips and other incomparable learning experiences this school year. This would not have been possible without the support of our committed parents, fantastic faculty, and superb staff who work tirelessly to provide a quality education for our students.

Library Books are Due

If your student has an overdue library book please encourage them to find the book and return it.   Overdue book information can be found in the parent portal.     A $20.00 fee will be charged for all lost books.

Snellville Middle School Student G Suite Accounts

All Gwinnett County schools will transition to using a district-wide domain (account) for all students next year.    The last couple of years students at Snellville Middle have had access to @snellvillemiddle.org Google accounts.   Students may have saved documents, presentations, and other items in their account.     These @snellvillemiddle.org Google accounts will be deactivated over the summer.   If your student has anything stored in their account they would like to keep they need to either share it with a personal Gmail account or back it up to a USB drive or other storage device.   If they have questions about this process they may see Mr. Johnston at school.

Stay Informed with the Parent Portal

If you are not already on the Parent Portal please stop by the office and sign up.   This awesome resource allows you to track your child's grades and attendance in real time from any computer.
