The Principal’s Update: October Edition

Students began their district interim assessments this week in all of their classes marking the mid-point of the semester.  I encourage you to continue to monitor your child’s academic progress.  Every parent has access to the parent portal to monitor and view their child’s grade. The parent portal is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. If you do not know how to access the portal, please stop by the Parent Center and see Ms. Blackshear, our Parent Liaison, for assistance.

Student led parent conferences will take place this month during Early Release on October 24th and October 25th.  Each year our parent participation in student-led conferences increases. Our parents understand the value of students taking responsibility for their own learning.  Last year, nearly half of our entire student body population had a parent attend a student led conference! This is a testament of our supportive and positive parent and community partnership.  Be on the lookout for information on signing up for a conference.

Parents, you don’t want to miss our annual Literacy Night. Join our students and teachers for an evening of Literacy Fun for the whole family.  Students and family members are encouraged to come dressed as a character from their favorite book.  Our Literacy Night will be held on Tuesday, October 30th at 6:30 p.m. See our Literacy Night flyer for details. We hope to see you there!

Our 8th grade students participated in PSAT testing on Tuesday, October 10th.  The PSAT results can be used to determine gifted placement for high school and content areas students need to work on most to be ready for Georgia Milestones, high school and beyond. In an effort to help familiarize our students with the format of the test, we have been practicing during Academy Connection Time. Students and parents will receive the results of the PSAT within the next few months. To learn more about the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test(PSAT) click here.

Also, 8th grade students will attend the district’s Career Connections field trip at the Infinite Energy Center on Tuesday, October 16th .  Our 8th grade students are expected to dress for success—dress professionally. Each year our school is highlighted and recognized by district personnel and career vendors as having the most well dressed and behaved 8th graders at this event. We want to continue this expectation of our students this year. I want to thank you in advance for ensuring that your son or daughter’s permission slip is returned on time and they are dressed in appropriate professional attire.  It takes us working together to ensure our children’s present and future success. It truly takes a village!

Please join me in welcoming our newest faculty members to Snellville Middle School. Ms. Marylee York, a veteran teacher who is returning to Gwinnett County, will join 7th grade and teach math and Social Studies.  Ms. York’s classes will provide much needed relief to several of our larger Social Studies’ and Math classes in 7th grade. Additionally, we have Ms. Jessica Beauvais, a veteran Art teacher, who relocated from Louisiana to Georgia. With Ms. Beauvais joining us full-time, we are now able to offer Art to all grade levels. Welcome Ms. York and Ms. Beauvais to the Comets Family!

Lastly, be on the lookout for information from our Parent Center regarding Parent Volunteer Training opportunities. We are always in need of parents to work together with us to help provide our students with the very best school experience.  If you are interested in being trained and/or learning more about how you can volunteer or give in some way, contact Ms. Blackshear, our Parent Liaison at (678) 344-3079.

Thank you for all that you do to support Snellville Middle School.  Feel free to follow us on Twitter @SnellvilleMS and be a part of all the latest news and excitement!
