6th Grade Parents,

The students have successfully completed their first round of interim exams.  The teachers use this information to monitor each student’s progress as we consistently aim towards mastery.  The next set of District Assessments will be at the end of the semester.  These tests will cover the material from the whole year so far.  Encourage your student to review and address any weaknesses in order to do his/her best.

The 6th grade teachers and students are excited about our upcoming field trip.  On October 30th, students will tour the museum, participate in the volcanoes and earthquakes auditorium program, watch Oceans:  Our Deep Blue Planet on 3D.  For more information on Fernbank museum, please visit http://www.fernbankmuseum.org/visit/.  It is our goal to provide real life experiences for our students in order for you to discuss their learning at home.

Thank you for all you do to continue encouraging your student.

Greetings Parents,

It is hard to believe that we have completed nine weeks of the 2018-2019 school year. The seventh grade teachers continue to provide innovative instruction that is aligned with the AKS. We ask that you continue to monitor the parent portal to ensure that your child is not missing assignments. A weekly review of the teachers eCLASS page will provide you with information on classroom instructional activities, homework and upcoming projects and events. We welcome and encourage your participation and engagement and most importantly your continued support.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, October 24th and Thursday, October 25th for Early Release Conferences.

7th Grade

Students in 7th grade life science will move from their 1st 9 weeks learning about cells up the levels of organization to human body systems.  Students will model system organization and engage in scientific argumentation over the role of different body systems in day to day activities.

Human body systems are a component of the course that students can directly see, hear, feel, and relate to and this leads to high engagement and interesting class discussions.

The unit culminates with the dissection of frogs to explore relationships between body systems in a real organism.

Connections

Cadets Excel!

As we enter our 9th week of school JLC Cadets are working hard to learn the Drill Sequences for their upcoming Cadet Challenge Drill Competition on October 30th. Cadets work together in teams of 6 with a Captain to learn to march military style Drill and then compete against each other for the top Drill Squad. The teams learn how to collaborate, communicate and build lifelong friendships that help them grow as future leaders in our community. The Cadet Challenge also helps the JLC Program by providing the Cadets with a safe space to test their leadership skills that they learn in the classroom and apply them in a real world situation. After the Drill Competition the Cadets will begin training for their Physical Fitness Competition.

Orchestra is joining in the fun October 30th for Literacy Night! Selected students are showing off their skills and techniques as guests enjoy a night filled with fun.  You will hear classical tunes and more. You might even hear a scream or two, as we fill the halls with some spooky music!

Greetings,

Parents, we are moving right along into this school year. As 8th graders, we have completed two standardized assessments (CogAT and PSAT) and are currently taking interim DAs.  Along with DAs your child is completing common assessments and projects which has an impact on your child’s grades. If your child needs additional assistance, make sure they are attending Help Day on Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m-8:50 am.

Please be aware that your child’s teachers will be contacting you if there is a need for a parent conference due to your child’s current grades. Early release conferences are Oct. 24-25, 2018. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Thursday, Oct. 25 for these conferences. Please notify your child’s teacher if you have not received an electronic invite for the Student-led conferences.

Dates to remember for the month of October/November:

  1. Early release Student Led Conferences- Oct. 24-25.

  2. Literacy Night - Title I School-wide Parent Involvement workshop - October 30.

  3. Student Holiday- November 6.

  4. Thanksgiving Break - November 19-23.

To earn promotion to the 9th grade,

  • students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed.

  • Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

  • In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

  • A Special Education student’s promotion is determined by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP).

  • Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan

As Always:

8th graders are expected to Be Ready, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful.

Title I update

We are eager to increase parental involvement here at Snellville Middle School.  We feel that having parents involved at school will not only help build positive interactions between parents and their children, but also between parents and teachers.  We have two excellent opportunities for parents to learn about what Comet Scholars are doing in the classroom and around our campus as part of our Title I Programming.

Join us for our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences to be held on Wednesday, October 24th from 2:00-6:00 and on Thursday, October 25th from 2:00-4:00. Parents can schedule a conference on our online conference scheduling site.   The link to this site may be found either on the student's eCLASS page or in the separate email sent out to parents on Friday, October 19th.

During these student-led conferences the students will share with parents how they set academic and behavioral goals, track their own progress, determine their strengths and weaknesses and share other aspects of their academic life in student-led conferences.

Our next school-wide parent workshop is our Annual Literacy Night. The workshop will begin at 6:30pm on October 30th.  Parents and students will come together to celebrate accomplishments in Language Arts. Parents and their children will have the opportunity to learn some fun ways to practice their Language Arts skills by learning new activities and games that they can do at home. We look forward to connecting with you!

See you there!

* Our School and Family Compacts are now uploaded on mypayment plus. Please login in to review and electronically acknowledge the receipt of the Compact.

Athletics Update

We are excited about this upcoming Athletics Season. Our new Head Boys Basketball Coach, Mark Mayfield and Head Girls Basketball Coach Nick Deloach selected a line-up second to none.  Scholar athletes are rigorously drilling and honing their ball handling skills as they prepare for their first game against Couch Middle School.

Cheerleading is also off to a dazzling start!  Our new Cheer Coach, Mrs. Starlette Anderson, has brought years of coaching experience and enthusiasm to our program. Twenty girls made it through challenging try-outs and are fresh off Cheer Camp.  Our cheer squad is working hard learning a wide array of new stunts and tumbling sequences.

We are all ready for another Championship. Go COMETS!

PBIS Update

We are proud to be a PBIS School (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). We have created a core team of teachers to implement this program with fidelity.   The aim of the Snellville Middle School PBIS Program is to continually enhance our school climate through creative and consistent school-wide tools and strategies used to proactively improve student behavior. We feel that an improved school climate will benefit our students in better attendance, superior grades and an overall better social/emotional school experience. Snellville Middle School is committed to ensuring student success by modeling and rewarding positive student behavior.

The core principles of the SMS program:

•    Effectively teach appropriate behavior during the school-wide Academy Time

•    Model behavior expectations school-wide

•    Reward positive behavior (Star Bucks)

Students and teachers receive Star Bucks for their role in creating a Respectful, Responsible and Ready learning environment.  Students can spend their Star Bucks in the PBIS Store that will be open by the end of October. If you would like to donate items that students would enjoy as a positive reward, please drop them off at the front office.

Based on student surveys, our kids would love to earn Star Bucks for the following items:

  • Hot Cheetos (Pretty much any spicy/hot chips)

  • Candy - Air Heads, Twix, snickers, Starburst, Whatchamacallet, Jolly Ranchers, etc.)

  • Takis

  • Ecos hair gel

  • Mechanical Pencils

  • Earbuds

  • Phone Cases (iphone, samsung)

  • Pop sockets

  • Fidget Spinners

  • Pencil Sharpeners

  • Posters (blank and with designs)
