October is full of celebrations! Halloween is the most well-known celebration; however, it is also Bullying Prevention Month. In addition to this, this week was Red Ribbon Week. So your children have celebrated being drug free and explored the negative effects of different kinds of bullying and our efforts to make Snellville Middle school a Bully-Free Zone!

Bullying Prevention

Throughout the month of October our student leaders have put together PSA’s to address cyberbullying, physical and verbal bullying. They have created and placed advertisements around the school about the negative effects of bullying and how everyone has the ability to stop it. Our message this October has been 1 in 5 students are bullied & 5 out of 5 can help prevent that. Help us make that possible, by monitoring your children’s internet usage, websites being visited and the language your student is using towards others at home. All people want to be accepted for who they are and that’s the environment we are establishing here at Snellville Middle School

Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity for our students to be informed of the negative effects of drug use and to take the opportunity to pledge to be drug free. This week you may have been wondering, “What is my kid wearing?” Well we put together a wide array of activities for our students to show their support for being drug free. Monday we had a blast from the past and revisited the 90’s fashion trends. Tuesday we showed our school spirit, and each grade level dressed in white, silver, or blue. Wednesday got a little crazy and we sported our wildest socks. Thursday we went to battle against drug, and wore army fatigue. And throughout the week our students had the opportunity to decorate their homeroom doors to support their pledge to be drug free. Friday, with the close of red ribbon week, the door decorations were judged and prizes were awarded, pledges were signed, and ribbons were given out. It’s been a great week for students and staff to get excited about being drug-free, while their still excited this is an opportune time for parents to reflect with their children about this topic.

G.O. Bond Referendum

The Gwinnett County Board of Education is asking voters to approve a General Obligation (G.O.) Bond referendum in the November 6, 2018, General Election. If approved, the School Board will be authorized to sell up to $350 million in G.O. bonds to fund capital improvements for schools throughout the county (including additional classrooms, turf fields, updated technology, safety improvements and a new Mill Creek cluster high school).  The projects funded by the G.O. bonds would benefit every cluster and every school.  In addition, no tax increase will be needed if the bond referendum passes.
