6th Grade Assistant Principal

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

We are approaching the end of the semester.  Our students have had a chance to look at their interim results and create next steps for improvement.  Discuss with your student that we learn the most from our mistakes.  Another way you can help is by looking at each individual grade and prioritizing what your student can redo or turn in.  Teachers provide help day every Wednesday at 8:15.  Your student can use that time to ask any questions about assignments that they missed or are causing difficulty.  There is still time to improve their grades and truly master the material they are learning in 6th grade.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am truly blessed to be working with you and your child. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Greetings Parents,

The first semester is quickly coming to an end. It is important that every student end the semester strong. In order for this to occur we need all hands on deck. Students will be offered a variety of opportunities to receive instructional support over the next three weeks. The weekly Wednesday Help Day will remain in place until the end of the semester. Arrival time is 8:15 am and support is available in each subject area. Students will have an opportunity to receive math support during academy time and during the connection period. Parents, it is important that you frequently view the parent portal. The parent portal will provide your child’s current grade in each class. If additional information is needed feel free to contact your child’s teacher via email or 770.972.1530.

Making A Connection

Orchestra

Ms. Donnaud would like you to know…..

I am so proud of all of our District 13 Solo and Ensemble participants in orchestra.  It was a wonderful event this past weekend at Lilburn M.S.  All of our musicians performed beautifully and received the highest score, superior, for their performances.

Thank you for your continued support!

7th Grade

The Curriculum Embedded Performance Task (CEPT) is a Math and Language Arts assessment designed to measure standards not easily accessed through a multiple choice assessment. What makes this assessment different is that students are required to demonstrate mastery of the AKS by applying significant conceptual understanding and higher order thinking. The Language Arts department will began administering this assessment the week of November 5, 2018.

Language Arts classes are halfway through the novel Rumble Fish.

7th Grade Life Science students are beginning a unit that raises almost as many questions as it does answers - genetics!  Students are excited to learn about how traits are inherited and how these patterns of inheritance differ for different traits and across different species.  From Mendel and his pea plants to modern genetic engineering technology, students will learn about the role chromosomes and DNA play in the expression of traits and apply mathematical computation to make predictions on the outcome of genetic crosses.

Math students are starting Unit 4: Ratios and Proportions. They will analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world problems like finding the total cost of a 12 pound  turkey if it costs $0.79 per pound.

Greetings,

Parents, we are counting down the days until the end of 1st semester. We have 24 days left.  I hope each of you took the opportunity to speak with your child’s teacher during our 1st semester Early Release conference held last month. If your child needs additional assistance, make sure they are attending Help Day on Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m-8:50 am.

Just some reminders as we end this semester:

Attendance is very important and key to your child’s success. Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher to build your child’s skills and progress if your child is frequently absent.

Make sure your child comes to school Ready- to learn; Responsible: accountable for his/her academic and behavioral actions; Respectful- showing politeness to others- (Teachers, Staff, peers,)

Dates to remember for the month of November/December

  1. Thanksgiving Break- November 19-23

  2. Finals content and connection classes- December 10-20, 2018*

    • Teachers will share the exact dates for content area finals.

To earn promotion to the 9th grade,

  • students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed.

  • Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

  • In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

  • A Special Education student’s promotion is determined by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP).

  • Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan

As Always:

8th graders are expected to Be Ready, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful.
