Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

As the semester winds down, it is important for the students to understand the impact of final exams. This is a time to demonstrate mastery and retention of the material for the whole year thus far. Students did not participate in semester exams during elementary, so this will be something we will all have to emphasize. Students should be actively reviewing each night. This includes reading, writing, and practicing skills learned throughout the year. The teachers have many resources on their eCLASS pages, so encourage your student to go there for help.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your student. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me and let me know how I can help your student have a great rest of the year. Have a wonderful holiday break.

Greetings Parents,

Only nine school days remain in the first semester, my how time fly’s… We have enjoyed having the opportunity to teach your child this semester, however there is still work to be done! District Assessments begin on December 10th. This year students will take all assessments on-line. Each content has been assigned a testing date. It is imperative that your child attends school each day and arrives on time as the opportunities for make ups are limited. The teachers are in the process of preparing each student for the District Assessments. Students have sharpened their computer techniques and are reviewing prior instruction. Try to make sure your child gets at least seven hours to eight hours of sleep and a few additional encouraging words from you each morning.
We know they are going to end the semester STRONG!

Greetings,

Parents, we are counting down the days until the end of 1st semester. We have 9 days left. If your child needs additional assistance, make sure they are attending Help Day on Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m-8:50 am.
Just some reminders as we end this semester:
Attendance is very important and key to your child’s success. Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher to build your child’s skills and progress if your child is frequently absent.
Make sure your child comes to school Ready- to learn; Responsible: accountable for his/her academic and behavioral actions; Respectful- showing politeness to others- (Teachers, Staff, peers,)

Finals content and connection classes- December 12-20, 2018.*
* Teachers will share the exact dates for connections and content area finals.

To earn promotion to the 9th grade,
-
students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed.
-
Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.
-
In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.
-
A Special Education student’s promotion is determined by his or her Individualized Education Program (IEP).
-
Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan

Title I Update
Coffee and Conversation-December 14, 2018
We are excited to announce our second "Coffee and Conversation." This is part of our monthly Title I Family Engagement events we host each month. The meeting will take place at the Parent Center, across from the Main Office, on December 14, 2018, from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. This is a time when we invite parents into our building to learn about all of the awesome things going on around campus. We also like to create opportunities for parents and guardians to engage with teachers, counselors, district personnel, community members and the SMS Administration. During this month's meeting, you will learn about Snellville Middle School's Counselor Advisory Council. You will learn about the programs and interventions we have in place as well as resources we have available to you and your family. You will gain insight into how you can help contribute to the success of our school and provide feedback on the work we do at SMS. We will also have a guest from the Snellville Church of Christ. Church representatives will share some helpful resources that the church provides. The event will be followed by light refreshments. We hope to see you there.
Athletics Update
Our Comets are starting out strong this season. Our girls and boys basketball players are putting in work every day and continue to improve. Our girls are undefeated! Girls Coach DeLoach says, "we are taking it one day at a time to reach our goal of another championship.”
Our Cheerleading squad is incredibly strong this year. Cheer Coach, Mrs. Anderson, says that "teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common goal." It is clear that her girls have bought into this vision as they serve as the fuel that ignites our crowds each week!
Testing Update
Our students will take District Post Assessments and SPGs from Wednesday, December 12th through Thursday, December 20th. These exams have been developed to measure student learning in all core and Connections classes. Your child’s District Assessment and SPG grade will be counted in their final grade. Please encourage your student to make preparing for these exams a top priority. Take a look at the study tips below that you can reinforce at home with your child.
