The Principal’s Update: January

I’d like to officially welcome everyone back to the 2nd semester of school!  It’s hard to believe that we are half way done with the 2018-2019 school year!  First semester grades are finalized and report cards will go home with students on Thursday, January 10, 2019.  Students who will be recognized for All As or All A’s and B’s for first semester will receive an invitation to participate in the awards ceremonies within the next two weeks.  Our 6th grade awards ceremony is Thursday, January 17th, 7th grade is Wednesday, January 23rd and 8th grade is Thursday, January 24th.  Also, any student(s) who are at risk for not meeting the promotion criteria based on first semester grades will receive information regarding Academic Assistance Program and grade recovery with their report cards.

Here are a few key reminders as we move into second semester:

  • Check the parent portal weekly.

  • Check your child’s My eClass page.

  • Please discuss with your child the importance of being a leader at SMS and keeping their hands, objects and unkind words to themselves each day.

  • Early release conferences will be held in February.  Student-led conferences are our standard format.

  • Know your child’s promotion criteria.

Please continue to work as a team with your child and his/her teachers to ensure that the final semester is a success.

Comets Basketball Spirit

Congratulations to our Comets and Lady Comets for their recent wins! Please come out to support our teams and cheerleaders. Our next game is Thursday, January 10th  at Brookwood against Crews MS. We want our Comets fans to fill their stands and take over! Hope to see you there!

Georgia Parent Survey Time – State Survey

Our students and staff are reaching higher heights each year at Snellville Middle. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the Georgia student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents may complete the survey using your personal computer, smartphone, or tablet.

If you do not have access to the Internet, you can come visit our Parent Center to complete the survey. All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating.  Our school consistently scores a top 4-star rating because of our parents and community school pride. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish and can be selected within the survey.

The Georgia Parent Survey link is posted below: http://gshs.gadoe.org/Lists/Parents/NewForm.aspx

As we move into our final semester, we will continue to challenge our students to become independent thinkers and life-long learners.  I am a very proud principal!

Sincerely,

Katise Long

Flu Season is Here

The 2018-19 flu season has begun and Georgia is experiencing higher levels of flu than anticipated for this time of year. Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend an annual flu vaccine as the first and best way to protect against influenza. And, although the flu shot can't prevent every case of flu, it can protect you from more severe illness. It’s not too late to get a flu shot; so consider getting a shot for yourself and your family members, especially those with asthma and other chronic illnesses. Health officials encourage families to take precautions to limit the spread of illness, including washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home and keeping ill children home when flu-like and other cold symptoms appear.

If your child has flu-like symptoms, please contact your physician or health clinic for recommendations. The flu may last 7-10 days. If your child has a fever, they must be kept home. They must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school. Please refer to this Healthy Habits link for tips on flu prevention. If you have questions about the flu or flu prevention, you may also contact the Gwinnett County Health Department at 770-339-4260.

We appreciate your efforts in helping us keep our students and staff well and healthy!
