Happy New Year!

Your 6th grader has finished the first semester of middle school.  There have been a lot of adjustments to the new school, friends, and academic expectations.  Continue to encourage your student to review nightly for all of their classes and spend time reading.  Even though they spend around 8 hours at school the students need to refer back to their learning for retention.  Even if there is not a specific assignment for homework, the students should review for each class and read.  True mastery of new learning takes time, and this generation is accustomed to getting information quickly in this digital age.  We have to work together to teach our students to persevere.

Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions about how to support your child at home.  We look forward to a great 2nd semester.

Greetings Parents,

Welcome back! It is my hope that the winter break has rejuvenated the students as the teachers and staff look forward with enthusiasm to the second semester. The teachers have reviewed their behavior and instructional expectations. The instructional lessons will apply everyday experiences to classroom learning. When students are connected to their learning, they come to school Respectful of the process, taking Responsibility and Ready to engage in the learning process.

Our goal is to continue to provide all students with the opportunity to excel so they can develop into active members of our school and the Snellville community.

7th grade math - Unit 4 Percent’s

Our math classes are currently focused on getting our students to use proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems. We will use menus and shopping lists to create receipts that provide real world examples for sales tax and gratuities. We will also focus on percentages as they relate to simple interest, commissions, discount and fees.

Activities include:

  • making receipts for a restaurant to include tip and making receipts for shopping trips to include sales tax.

  • learning how to calculate the sale price after a markdown and how stores markup prices to retail price.

  • understanding how commission works and how salary is influenced by those that work on commission.

Students in 7th grade life science will apply their fall learning on the genetic basis of inheritance to the way that the environment shapes those genes and the resulting traits in natural selection.  Using hands on and digital models, students will investigate how a trait can evolve in a population as a result of changes in the environment. In an application of math in their science learning, students will use statistical methods to make predictions about how populations may change in the future. Students will finish out the nine weeks on the classification of life, creating dichotomous keys and learning how scientists organize the more than 8 million known species of living things on earth.

Making A Connection

Many of our students will have an opportunity to experience different classes this semester. Changes can often create a sense of uncertainty. Yet, it can also result in growth and meaningful experiences. Your child through their connection experiences have the chance to engage in a variety of electives and work with different teachers and students. This enrichment outside of the core schedule is necessary to their overall growth and development

New Business and Computer Science students!

At the beginning of the semester, it is always exciting getting to know and build relationships with new students.  On a typical day in our SMS Business class, the teacher Mrs. LaChee' Johnson begins the class by saying "Good Morning Class", then the students will say together as one "Good Morning Ms. Johnson" In addition, the teacher addresses the class with "I Can Be......" and then naturally together as a class the students say a class chant " Ready, Respectful and Responsible" Furthermore, students are trained to log on to their computer, go to e-Class  to check out grades and open up today's lesson on their BCS course website page.  The first week of the semester is used to discuss lab and class procedures, taking pretests, and learning the class expectations. Not to mention, learning about Google Apps, proper keyboarding techniques, and creating their first Google slide show with animations. The main purpose of this class is to give students the skills needed to make them more marketable and employable in the 21st Century Work World. #WeWillBeSuccessful

English Language Learner Family Night

We are delighted to announce our ESOL and Hispanic Family Night on Thursday, January 24th from 6:00-7:30 in the Media Center.  At Snellville, we work hard to make our school more inclusive for our ESOL and Hispanic students. During this event, you will learn more about the academic supports, student clubs and activities available to your child as well as grade-level requirements. Additionally, we will help you set up an email and gain access to the Parent Portal so you can keep up with your child’s academic performance. You will also gain insight on how to effectively reach out to teachers with your questions and concerns.  We will round out the evening with dinner and fun activities for the entire family to enjoy. See you there!

Athletics Update

As we enter the second half of the basketball season, our Comets are going strong. Our athletes are working hard and even practiced and conditioned over break. Our Girls remain undefeated, and our boys are 4 and 4 after a double win over Crews Middle School. In addition to being superb athletes, our Comets are scholars, many of whom have a solid “B” average or above! They were so proud to show off the report cards to their coaches this week.  Please be sure to come out and support us this Saturday as we take on Five Forks. This is a home game that will start at 9:00 at South Gwinnett High School. Playoffs and another championship…here we come…GO COMETS!!!

Coffee and Conversation

Each month the Snellville Middle School Title I Office hosts a “Coffee and Conversation.” During these meetings in our Parent Center, parents can come into the building to enjoy the “Comet” experience and learn about the great academic programs and opportunities available to our students, all the while enjoying a cup of coffee. This Friday, January 11, 2019, we talked about 21st Century Learning and the shifts in educational trends to accommodate the rapidly evolving job market. It is imperative that our students learn to collaborate, communicate, create and think critically to be competitive in the jobs of tomorrow, most of which do not yet exist. At Snellville Middle, our teachers work hard to prepare our students for tomorrow through problem-based learning, technology and robotics. We had a special presentation from two of our brightest Comets, Alma Villapando, and Zeniya Buggs.  They shared about their experience with the FIRST LEGO League robotics program.  These students also presented to all of the principals in the South Gwinnett cluster in November. We will host another “Coffee and Conversation” next month where we will continue our discussion on 21st Century Learning at Snellville Middle.  We will have other special student guests from our “Drones For Good” competition team.  We hope to see you there!!!

Greetings,

Happy New Year Parents! We are moving right along into second semester. We have completed the main administration of our District Assessments Pre Tests for second semester.  Just like first semester, if your child needs additional assistance, make sure they are attending Help Day on Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m-8:50 am.

I would like for you to help me welcome Ms. Caddle, our new math teacher. Her first day was Monday, January 7, but she has been in the building before the winter break preparing for second semester. We are so excited to have her join our 8th grade team and our math team.

Attendance is very important and key to your child’s success. Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher to build your child’s skills and progress if your child is frequently absent.

Make sure your child comes to school Ready- to learn; Responsible: accountable for his/her academic and behavioral actions; Respectful- showing politeness to others- (Teachers, Staff, peers,)
