Congratulations Geography Bee Winners

The annual National Geographic GeoBee is a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.  Questions cover not only geography, but also cultures, physical features, history and earthscience.

The National Geographic Society developed the GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee.

School champions, including SMS 2019 School Champion Adia Dixon, will take an online qualifying test; up to 100 of the top test scorers in Georgia will compete at the State GeoBee, held in Milledgeville on the campus of Georgia College.  The winner of the State GeoBee receives an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., in May to participate in the GeoBee national championship, competing for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll. Learn more at www.natgeobee.org.

The 6th grade STEM team and the Drones For Good

Competition teams are selling Domino’s Slice the Price cards.     Each $10 card allows you to get a free large pizza when you order a large pizza.  Cards may be used as many times as you like until the end of 2019.    The proceeds will be used to purchase STEM related equipment and materials for the students to use.   If you know someone on the 6th grade

STEM team or in Mr. Johnston’s Engineering class ask them about a card.  You can also order a Slice the Price card on MyPaymentsPlus.

Kindness Celebration Party

The 6th grade Counseling Department will be implementing a new initiative to promote Kindness. One student from each 6th grade homeroom that is seen performing random acts of kindness will be identified by their teachers and will be rewarded for demonstrating compassion. The students will be able to attend a celebration party filled with games, food and snacks. The counseling department is requesting donations to have a celebration each month for the students. There is no donation too small. Please contact Mrs. Clarke, the 6th grade counselor at 770-736-4477, if you would like to donate or if you should have any questions.
