Greetings Parents,

We are looking forward to Early Release and Student Led Conferences.  The students will be spending the next two weeks preparing their portfolios to show you.  Each student will be asked to highlight his/her strengths and identify areas for improvement.  This goal setting process is a life-long skill that will benefit them in the future.  All students will present to their parent/guardian or another adult in the building.  We hope to see you on February 20th or 21st.  Be sure to contact your child's teacher if you would like a one-on-one conference.

Thank you for encouraging your son/daughter to continue the learning experience at home.  We appreciate all you do to support SMS.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Greetings Parents,

As a grade level we have settled in to the second semester of the 2018-2019 school year. The teachers continue to embrace innovative curriculum strategies. It is important that every student is an active participant in the learning. There is much to be completed in a very short period of time. It is important that your child arrives to school on time and remains for the entire day. Each teacher has an eCLASS page where you can review the content instruction. Grades and missing assignments can be reviewed on the Parent Portal daily. Communication will be critical as the school year comes to a close. Please keep an open line of communication with your child’s teacher, counselor and administrator. We welcome the conversations as our goal is an academic year that has prepared each student for 8th grade.

Making the Connection in the Classrooms

Social Studies has started a Project-Based Learning Unit on Governments and Economies of Africa.  Students will perform research leading up to the creation of a Non-Governmental Organization which will invest in capital goods and/or human capital to raise the standard of living in either Kenya, Nigeria, or Africa.

Students in 7th grade life science are building on their foundation of genetics to explore how evolution changed those genes and created the diversity of life on earth through natural selection.  Students will use digital and hands on models to track changes in populations over time and compare and contrast natural selection to the human driven process of artificial selection.  We will also examine examples of evolution that affect our daily lives, including antibiotic resistance. The 9 weeks will conclude as we try to organize the incredible diversity of life using historical and modern classification techniques.  Students will develop and use dichotomous keys. As always, we will continue to read and write every week in science, supporting our learning with a literacy based approach to science.

The 7th and 8th Grade Snellville Middle School Orchestras took a field trip this week to see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra perform a fantastic collection of compositions written by female composers.  The theme of the concert
was "She Composes".  It was a wonderful tribute not only to women composer, but to all past and present composers.  After the concert, students were sharing enthusiastically about the experience.  Many students couldn't wait to get a hold of their instruments back at school and begin emulating some of the techniques they saw demonstrated by the professionals.

Our chaperones and bus drivers were top notch!  The coordinator and director for the event, Tiffany Jones, made sure our experience was unforgettable!  Thank you to all who supported our trip!  It is one I think we will do again!

Parents you are invited to view the Gwinnett County Annual Tapestry display at the ISC.
We will be displaying artwork at Tapestry Feb 19 - 25 the reception will be Feb 19 6-7:30 @ ISC

Dear Comet Families, Teachers, and Fans,

It is hard to believe that the 2018-2019 Basketball Season is coming to a close. On behalf of the coaches and the administration, I would like to say thank you for all of your support.  You joyfully give of your time to cheer our Comets on in the stands (very intensely at times), even after a long day of work. Win, lose or draw, there you are!

Our Basketball Players and Cheer Leaders have grown throughout the season in skill and maturity and gelled as a unit. Our athletes are first and foremost scholars who understand the need to remain committed to their academics and to be good role models. For that, they are to be commended.

Boys and Girls Basketball teams are both headed to playoffs! Our Girls Basketball team is poised to secure another  Championship as they round off another undefeated season and are number one seed. Our Boys Basketball Team, played with grit and determination this season. Our boys had some outstanding victories and some setbacks, but our young team played with grit and determination every game and are currently number seven seed. Girls and Boys can take it all the way!!

Please come out and support your Comets this “Super Saturday,” February 9, for the Eastern Division Basketball Tournament at Central Gwinnett High School. Girls play Crews Middle at 9:00 AM, and our Boys go up against Grace-Snell at 1:30 PM. We look forward to seeing you there!

Greetings,

Parents, January was a long month and as in the past, the next few months will go by quickly. It is very important for your 8th grader to focus, focus, focus during this last semester. We have AAP (Academic Assistance Program) in session this month and if your child is attending, note attendance is mandatory to pass.

9th grade registration forms have been distributed to your child with step 1 completed by teachers. You should have reviewed the Academic and Elective courses with teacher recommendations, completed Step 3 on the back of the form, signed, and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Attendance is very important and key to your child’s success. Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher to build your child’s skills and progress if your child is frequently absent.

Make sure your child comes to school Ready- to learn; Responsible: accountable for his/her academic and behavioral actions; Respectful- showing politeness to others- (Teachers, Staff, peers,)
