6th Grade Parents,

The students have been working hard during the 2018-2019 school year. Transition to middle school can be difficult for some students, but our students at SMS have done an outstanding job. Encourage your student to end the year strong.  He/she can do this by staying focused on demonstrating mastery of their learning.  Semester post-tests are often difficult for students.  They need to review material from the whole semester.  You can help by looking on your child’s eCLASS page and asking questions on the topics they have covered this semester.  The students can also pull out work from this semester and explain the concepts to you. It has been awhile since we have studied this material as an adult, so this is a great opportunity for the students to show us how much they know. They should also be practicing math problems and reading nightly.  This will help them greatly on their tests that begin on May 13th.

As our students transition to 7th grade, keep encouraging them to practice reading, writing, and their math skills.  Students can win a Chromebook if they enter the Gwinnett County Public Library Summer Reading Program. There are many other wonderful events for teens on the calendar at the local library.  Even though the students may not have access to their teachers’ eClass page, they can always use the practice site usatestprep.com.  If a student practices once or twice a week completing a small test or general practice on their weak standards, it will keep the math concepts fresh in their minds.  (Click on the links for more details.)  With the right resources at our students’ fingertips, they will start the year with success.

It has been a pleasure to be your child’s assistant principal this year.  Even though they will go onto the next grade level, they will always be special to me.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns in the future.

Have a wonderful end of the school year and summer.

Greetings Parents,

The end of the school year always presents a challenge. The students and staff have worked hard. Yet, it is important to remember that no instructional days are inconsequential or expendable. The last days are as important as the first.

The efforts and achievements of our team can be dissipated in the final days if those days are spent unproductively. As we close out the school year, students will continue to experience meaningful thought provoking instruction in every classroom. Students are preparing not only for the summer but for 8th grade!  Snellville Middle School is ready to meet the challenges of May. With this kind of commitment and resolve, we can continue to make the end of the year as exciting as the first day of school.

Let’s keep up the work.

7th Grade Content

Students in 7th grade life science are wrapping up their study of ecological relationships and preparing for their final exams.  The GCPS final exams account for 10% of student grades and may additionally be used to by students demonstrate learning on previously deficient content.  We look forward to all students showing how much they have learned this semester in 7th grade life science.  Following the exams students will participate in extension studies that will prepare them for 8th grade science and explore the workings of the human mind through a book study on Phineas Gage.

Connections

Orchestra is having an amazing Spring!  The 6th Grade Honor Orchestra students rocked it out at a all day string workshop at Sweetwater Middle School.  Snellville Middle School teamed up with 8 other middle schools from around Gwinnett, and put on an outstanding performance.

Our final concert of the year was on May 7th.  Folks, let me tell you we had a house full of family, friends, staff, and administration support.  A great turn out! The concert featured our 6th, 7th, 8th grade Orchestras, and highlighted some of our super stars that participated in Solo and Ensemble.  I am so proud of my students.  They demonstrated professionalism on and off the stage.  Students played their music with pride, spirit, and heart.

You can tell we have something special here at SMS.  I appreciate all the support I receive from my parents and my SMS family.  Thank you all for a great year!

Regards,

Ms. Luevenia Holloway

Our students will take District Post Assessments and SPGs from Monday, May 13th through Wednesday, May 22nd.    These exams have been developed to measure student learning in all core and Connections classes.  Your child’s District Assessment and SPG grade will be counted in their final grade. Please encourage your student to make preparing for these exams a top priority.  It is essential that your student is present and on time during the testing period to avoid having to make up tests once school is out of session. Take a look at the study tips below that you can reinforce at home with your child.

  • Be prepared. ... be sure you've studied hard.

  • Keep organized and on task.

  • Keep hydrated and eat well-balanced meals.

  • Exercise to eliminate stress.

  • Get enough sleep the night before the test.

  • Listen closely to any instructions.

  • Read EACH test question carefully

  • Focus on addressing each question individually. ...

  • Relax and just do your PERSONAL BEST!!!
