Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The Principal’s Update: September
Dear Parents:
We are just days away from the official start of the Autumn season and have already completed nearly six weeks of school.
Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Tiffany Fortner for becoming our 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Fortner is a 6th Science/Language Arts teacher on the STEM team. We are delighted to have her represent Snellville Middle School and are rooting her on to become a Gwinnett County Teacher of the Year finalist. Mrs. Fortner has what it takes to make it all the way! Let’s root her on to victory!
We are very excited about Snellville Middle’s 50th school anniversary celebration. We will be celebrating on Sunday, September 15th. Guests will have an opportunity to tour the school from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. and our program will begin at 3:00 p.m. We are proud to be the first middle school in Gwinnett County. There are many former and current school and district leaders and teachers who began their careers in the classrooms and hallways of Snellville Middle. Please join us in celebrating and showing our Comets pride on Sunday, September 15th. I am looking forward to seeing you there!
We are a very supportive Comets community and encourage our students, parents and community to attend home sporting events/games at South Gwinnett High. Parents, please read a very important announcement regarding sporting events/games at South Gwinnett High School. CLICK HERE
As we continue to partner together in our community, South Gwinnett High School will host a cluster outreach session from the district’s Office of Student Discipline. Please plan to attend and learn more about ways to support your son and daughter in today’s fast moving society. Please CLICK HERE for more information.
Lastly, our 8th grade students are preparing for CogAT testing which takes place beginning Monday, September 9th – Wednesday, September 11th. Please be sure that your 8th grader is present at school during testing days and times. There is no preparation required for the CogAT but we do ask that our 8th graders eat a good breakfast, power down electronics late at night, get a good night’s rest and are ready to do their very best.
For any of our SMS Comet families whose family members or friends are impacted by Hurricane Dorian, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Thank you for all that you do to support Snellville Middle School. Feel free to follow us on Twitter @SnellvilleMS and be a part of all the latest news and excitement!
