6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

6th Grade Parents,

The sixth grade students have had several wonderful opportunities to be a part of lately. Two of the teams attended Junior Achievement Biztown this week, and the third team will attend next week. This is where they learn a little about businesses, bank accounts, investments, insurance, and other items that help them be successful adults. On October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, they will have an opportunity to participate in a Gem Mining Adventure at SMS. This in-house field trip will allow the students to learn how to identify rocks, minerals and fossils and keep those that they identify. Be sure that you have signed your student up by Friday, September 20th. The $10 payment can be made on www.mypaymentsplus.com or by cash. Please see your child's Science teacher with any questions.
Students will begin interims or midterms right after fall break, so have your child begin reviewing a few minutes nightly for each class. One of the hardest transitions for 6th graders is retaining all of the information they have learned this semester for these tests. Our students have great potential, and we want them to perform their very best.
Literacy Night is a lot of fun for the students. Go ahead and mark October 29th on your calendar. Students come to school at 6:00 PM dressed up for some fun. A Boy Scouts' meeting will be held that night at 7:00 as well. Encourage your student to find something he/she enjoys and get involved.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We are focused on helping your child be successful at SMS.

7th-grade students are Ready, Respectful, Responsible. In English Language Arts, students have written several narratives and learned how each component impacts the final product. In Science, students have explored the characteristics of living and non-living things and are moving into a unit about cells. In Social Studies, students are learning about the Middle East. In Math, students are learning to multiply and divide rational numbers. Overall, we are moving forward full steam and students are engaged in real-world tasks to master the standards.

Parents, we have completed 6 weeks of school and we have done a lot in those 30 days.

First, your child has completed their first standardized test- CogAT and attended JA Finance Park. Secondly, your child has been working very hard in their academic classes. To name a couple of things, the students have participated in a mock court in their language arts class and created Solar Cookers and tested them in physical science.
Please visit your child’s portal to monitor his/her grades, attendance, behavioral, lunch account as well as media center book checkouts and overdue books. Also visit your child’s teachers’ eCLASS pages for updates on assignments, grades, upcoming tests, etc.
If you have been invited to sit in on a Student Support Team (SST), please attend. This meeting is to allow us as a team to see what additional interventions are needed for your child’s success academically or behaviorally.
Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I eagerly look forward to working with you and your child(ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta_pouncey@gwinnett.k12.ga.us
