The Principal’s Update: October

Dear Parents:

Students will begin taking their district interim assessments in their four core classes on October 17th. The district assessments are used to measure how much students have

learned and mastered the first nine weeks of school. Please be sure that your child is present each day for his/her assessments.  Every parent has access to the parent portal to monitor and view their child’s grades and academic progress. The parent portal is accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. If you do not know how to access the portal, please stop by the Parent Center and see Ms. Blackshear, our Parent Liaison, for assistance.

Our 8th grade students will participate in PSAT testing on Wednesday, October 16th.  The PSAT results can be used to determine gifted placement for high school and content area(s) that students need to work on most to be ready for Georgia Milestones, high school and beyond. In an effort to help familiarize our students with the format of the test, we have been practicing during Comet Academy Time. Students and parents will receive the results of the PSAT within the next few months.

Parents, you don’t want to miss two very exciting family events this month.  We invite you to join us for our very first annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Monday, October 7th at 6:00 p.m. in the Old Gym. There will be food, music and lots of family fun!

Our 4th annual Literacy Night will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 p.m. Students and family members are encouraged to come dressed as a character from their favorite book.  We hope to see you there!

Student led parent conferences will take place this month during Early Release on October 23rd and October 24th.  Each year our parent participation during student-led conferences increases. Our parents understand the value of students taking responsibility for their own learning.  Last year, nearly half of our entire student body population had a parent attend a student led conference! This is a testament of our supportive and positive parent and community partnership.  Be on the lookout for information on signing up for an early release conference.

Lastly, be on the lookout for information from our Parent Center regarding Parent Volunteer Training opportunities. We are always in need of parents to work together with us to help provide our students with the very best school experience.  If you are interested in being trained and/or learning more about how you can volunteer or give in some way, contact Ms. Blackshear, our Parent Liaison at (678) 344-3079.

Thank you for all that you do to support Snellville Middle School.  Feel free to follow us on Twitter @SnellvilleMS and be a part of all the latest news and excitement!
