Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

6th Grade Parents,

Students will begin taking their first round of district interim exams on October 17th. District Interim exams are critical to both teaching and learning. Students will be able to show what they have learned and mastered and what they need to work on before final exams in December. Teachers will use information from the assessments to monitor each student’s progress towards content mastery. Encourage your student to review and address any weaknesses in order to do his/her best on the interim exams. Also, student led conferences will take place at the end of October, please be sure to sign up for a conference with your student when the link is sent to parents to sign up.

Thank you for all you do to continue encouraging your son or daughter to do his or her very best each day.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We are focused on helping your child be successful at SMS.

Happy Fall! As you know, we welcomed a new teacher to our grade level this week. Ms. Sanford is a veteran Gwinnett County social studies teacher. She will take the place of Ms. Weathers, leading our learners in mastering the 7th grade social studies AKS.

As students become more comfortable, we have noticed an increase in cell phone usage for non-instructional purposes. I have spoken to each homeroom to remind students of our cell phone policy: Cell phones should be out of sight, unless used with permission for instructional purposes. I also shared with each student that if their cell phones are visible, I will collect them, contact a parent, and return it at the end of the day on the first offense. On the second and subsequent offensives, the cell phone will be returned to a parent. Since my conversations with each homeroom, I have collected very few phones because our students are Ready, Respectful, and Responsible!
I hope you have a fantastic fall break.

Hispanic Heritage Month

On Monday October, 7 we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a program dedicated to Hispanic/Latino countries. We were presented with the history, souvenirs, music and authentic food that represented each country. We would like to thank each parent and student that helped make this night a success. We look forward to celebrating again next year.
