Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Looking for ways to connect with your ‘tween? The monthly Middle Years newsletter offers tips and techniques to help you connect with and aide your middle schooler through these tumultuous times. Click here to view the October newsletter.
Every October, schools, and organizations across the country join STOMP Out Bullying™ in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal: encourage schools, communities, and organizations to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying and put an end to hatred and racism by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of all forms of bullying on all children of all ages.
At Snellville Middle School, we have implemented several activities to promote Anti-Bullying Month. October 3, 2019, the 6th graders attended an Anti-Bullying assembly hosted by “Don’t Be a Monster". The students were able to learn about different types of bullying, and being an Upstander. During October, the students will be participating in several different activities highlighting kindness, cyberbullying, and social skills. One of the activities is the Kindness Project. The students and their parents will work on spreading Kindness and completing random acts of kindness. In the kindness packet, the students will also get an opportunity to read a book with their families and complete discussion questions. Students must learn about bullying at school as well as at home. The project will be due October 25, 2019, during Comet Academy Time. During this time, the students can share what they did for their Kindness project. Some teachers are offering extra credit, please reach out to your child’s teacher for details.
Additionally, each classroom has been given a Kindness checklist. The homeroom classes per grade level with the most Kindness checklist items completed by October 25 will win an opportunity to participate in an Escape Room Challenge on October 31. Students who win will be given exclusive information about the location and time. This project is an additional project outside of the Kindness Project.
Next week is Bullying Awareness and Red Ribbon Week! Please empower your students and others about bullying by knowing what it is, how to handle it and how to help others. Visit stopbullying.gov for this information and many more resources.
Finally, October 21-25 is our Anti-Bullying themed week. Please see this flyer for details.

It's time to help our community!
Our Annual Great Days of Service begins next week on October 21. SMS Student Council and our school will be collecting quality canned goods for our community. Please support the cause by sending some items to school.
