Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

6th Grade Parents,

We are approaching the end of the semester. Our students have had a chance to look at their interim results and create next steps for improvement. Discuss with your student that we learn the most from our mistakes. Another way you can help is by looking at each individual grade and prioritizing what your student can redo or turn in. Teachers provide help day every Wednesday at 8:15. Your student can use that time to ask any questions about assignments that they missed or are causing difficulty. There is still time to improve their grades and truly master the material they are learning in 6th grade.
Please join us for Parent Involvement Day on November 21st from 9:30 AM until noon. This is a great time to experience the rigorous instruction going on at Snellville Middle School.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am truly blessed to be working with you and your child.

Please let me know if you have any questions. We are focused on helping your child be successful at SMS.

Happy Fall!
With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, I am reminded of everything I am thankful for and that includes supportive families, caring staff, and most importantly students that love learning at Snellville Middle School. In 7th grade, students recently completed their Interim District Assessment. The Interim assessed students' mastery of AKS covered during the first 9 weeks of school in each academic area: Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Overall, students did well! In the upcoming weeks, we will have our first PBIS celebration, an Ice Cream Social! Students can cash in 30 Star Bucks to attend. We're also gearing up for basketball season. Our opening game is this Saturday at South Gwinnett High School tip-off is at 9:00 AM. See you there!

Thanks to all the parents who participated in our Fall Early release conferences on October 23 and October 24. We have exactly 25 school days remaining for this 1st semester. Please continue to visit your child’s portal to monitor his/her grades, attendance, behavioral, lunch account as well as media center book checkouts and overdue books. Also visit your child’s teachers’ eClass pages for updates on assignments, grades, upcoming tests, etc.
If you have been invited to sit in on a Student Support Team (SST), please attend. This meeting is to allow us as a team to see what additional interventions are needed for your child’s success academically or behaviorally.
We had a successful Walk N Talk on November 1, for students who were Ready, Respectful, and Responsible.
Calendar events for the month of November:

Our Saturday games will begin at 9:00 a.m. with girls playing first. Our Thursday games will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the exception of our Monday game vs. Jordan Middle School. This game begins at 5:30.

Parent Involvement Day- November 21, 2020- 9:30 a.m- 12:00 noon. Come and visit your child’s classroom and instructionally interact with them.
Review the promotion criteria with your child to ensure he/she is on the right track for promotion to the 9th grade:
About Promotion to 9th Grade

To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed. Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.
In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.
Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan.

Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I eagerly look forward to working with you and your child(ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta_martin@gwinnett.k12.ga.us
