Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal
Greetings Parents,

Thank you to all the parents/guardians that were able to make our student-led conferences. The students did an excellent job sharing their successes, areas of growth, and goals for the remainder of the year. The students truly benefit from this opportunity.

Next week we will start taking interim assessments. Please encourage your student to review as this assessment covers material from the beginning of the semester. The teachers use this assessment to determine areas each student needs to work on in addition to providing students feedback on their current progress. We will be taking the Milestone State Assessments after spring break, and this interim will help everyone understand what our students need to reach mastery. It is important that all of us work together for our students’ achievement, and you are a vital part of the team.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

The Principal’s Update: January

Happy New Year and welcome back to the 2nd semester! It is hard to believe that we are half way done with this school year! Report cards for first semester will be sent home with students on Wednesday, January 15th. Final semester grades are currently available through the Parent Portal. Students who will be recognized for first semester academic achievement will receive an invitation along with their report card. Please continue to work as a team with your child and his/her teachers to make the 2nd semester a success.
Here are a few key reminders as we move into second semester:
-
School wide Help Days – Wednesdays begins at 8:15 a.m.
-
Check the parent portal weekly.
-
Check your child’s My eClass page and/or teachers’ pages.
-
Please discuss with your child the importance of being a leader at SMS and keeping their hands, objects and unkind words to themselves each day.
-
Early release conferences will be held in February.
-
Know your child’s promotion criteria (see below).
Promotion Criteria
For students to earn promotion to the next grade, all students must pass 4 out of 5 classes per semester, with Connections classes being averaged as one grade each semester. Two of the classes must be Language Arts and Math. Students that earn below a 70 in any of the content areas may be at-risk for not passing one of their classes this term and will have to attend Academic Assistance Program in February.
Parent Survey Time – District Survey
The Gwinnett County Public School system is committed to providing students with the best possible education and school experience. Our students and staff are reaching higher heights each year at Snellville Middle. Please share with the district about all the things that we do so well and any areas that we can grow by completing the following survey:
GCPS RBES Parent Survey is available through the GCPS Parent Portal. If you have not signed up for the parent portal, please go to the GCPS website at www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us and click on the ‘Parents” tab for more information or contact the school to sign up for access. Your input is critical for our school’s continued success. Please be sure to complete this survey.
Monday, January 20th
We will not be in school on January 20th. I hope that you take the opportunity to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and reflect on his legacy this month. We are certainly grateful for his life’s work and servant leadership. Please consider using January 20th as a day of service to others in honor of Dr. King.
As we move into our final semester, we will continue to challenge our students to become independent thinkers and life-long learners. I am a very proud principal!
Sincerely,
Katise Long
Principal
