6th Grade Parents,

Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family have enjoyed your break. Now that the transition to middle school is behind you and your student, we can focus on achieving at the highest level. Talk with your student about his/her goals for this semester and create a plan to achieve those goals. We must help them set a clear plan since it is difficult for them to do it on their own at this time. “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” Do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, Ms. Clarke the counselor, or me for any help creating a plan for success.

We will have our annual STEAM Night on Wednesday, 1/22/2020 starting at 5:30.  This is a great time for you and your child to experience a fun learning activity together. Be sure to bring any additional children since this is great fun for the whole family. I hope to see you there!

We’re excited to have students back and are well into the 2nd semester curriculum. In this short period of time, students have taken make up finals and second semester pretest to help teachers prepare rigorous instruction. Parents, please review your student’s report card and sign and return the envelope to school.

We will honor students who received all A’s and all A’s and B’s during the first semester on Wednesday, January 22nd at 3:00PM during our 7th grade awards ceremony. Hope to see you there!

Happy New Year and welcome back to 2nd semester. We have hit the ground running since last week. Your child has completed district assessment pretest for 2nd semester which allows our teachers to get a snapshot of your child’s background knowledge for 2nd semester AKS.

First semester progress reports went home on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, along with your child’s PSAT scores. The teachers reviewed the scores with your child, but please review it with them a second time.

1st Semester Honor Roll Awards Ceremony invitations were sent home for students who made All A’s and All A’s & B’s for 1st semester. We changed our format this year by having all ceremonies on the same day during each grade level connections time.

AAP applications were sent home with 1st semester progress reports. If your child has to attend AAP, make sure the application is returned by the designated due date.

If you have been invited to sit in on a Student Support Team (SST), please attend. This meeting is to allow us as a team to see what additional interventions are needed for your child’s success academically or behaviorally.

Review the promotion criteria with your child to ensure he/she is on the right track for promotion to the 9th grade:

About Promotion to 9th Grade

To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed. Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan.

Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I eagerly look forward to working with you and your child(ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta_martin@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

8th graders are expected to Be Ready, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful.
