Lesley Grimes
6th Grade and Connections Assistant Principal

Greetings Parents,

We are looking forward to Early Release and Student Led Conferences.  The students will be spending the next two weeks preparing their portfolios to show you.  Each student will highlight his/her strengths and identify areas for improvement.  This goal setting process is a life-long skill that will benefit them in the future.  All students will present to their parent/guardian or another adult in the building.  We hope to see you on February 19th or 20th. Be sure to contact your child's teacher if you would like a one-on-one conference.

Thank you for encouraging your son/daughter to continue the learning experience at home.  We appreciate all you do to support SMS.  Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectful: Students are continuing to honor our school rule of no cell phones by storing them out of sight during the school day.

2nd semester is going by quickly and before you know it, it will be spring break. Our teachers are providing engaging lessons for your child and getting them ready for District Assessment Interims (middle of March) and Georgia Milestones (after spring break). Please make sure you sign up for our winter early release student -led conferences.

If you have been invited to sit in on a Student Support Team (SST), please attend. This meeting is to allow us as a team to see what additional interventions are needed for your child’s success academically or behaviorally.

Calendar events for the month of February:

Early Release conferences- February 19-20. Students are dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

Review the promotion criteria with your child to ensure he/she is on the right track for promotion to the 9th grade:

About Promotion to 9th Grade

To earn promotion to the 9th grade, students are required to pass five out of six subjects each semester. Language Arts and Mathematics must be two of the five subjects passed. Should a student not earn promotion to 9th grade, he or she may have the opportunity to attend summer school to learn the AKS curriculum not mastered during the school year. Students may attend summer school for no more than two semester-long classes.

In Georgia, 8th grade students also are required to achieve Grade Level or Above on the Reading and Vocabulary domain of the Language Arts Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) Assessment and achieve the performance level of Developing or higher on the Mathematics Georgia Milestones EOG Assessment. Students who do not meet either of these state promotion requirements may be required to retest after summer school.

Promotion for an English Learner (EL) or a student with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is guided by his or her English Learner Proficiency Plan.

Thanks for your commitment to the South Gwinnett Cluster and Snellville Middle School. I eagerly look forward to working with you and your child(ren). Please do not hesitate to call me at 770-736-4471, or email me at Twanitta.Martin@gcpsk12.org.

8th graders are expected to Be Ready, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful.
